I'm replacing the selector shifter seal and throttle pressure seal, so I dropped the valve body last night.
I thought the valve body was suppose to hang by the parking rod by a clip onto the tranny, but when i removed the 10th bolt, the thing dropped right out, is this right? Now I don't exactly know where the rod is suppose to go inside the transmission.

Also, isn't there suppose to be a big spring underneath the valve body? There was nothing under mine, could it have been removed for harder gear shifts? I think I read that somewhere...

The pic below shows the cavity that the park rod goes into, if the park dog is lined up with its cog the rod will come out easily. Insert the bulb end of the park rod into the V notch and push.

The accumulator spring is often removed in the misbelief that it will improve shifting....the spring has nothing to do with upshifts.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the reply John.

So the rod should go in here if I understand you correct?

Should I invest in a new accumulator spring?

Yes, insert it in the red circle. No big deal if the spring is missing, many are.
