1968 383 Carter AVS 4bbl Choke Issue!!!!!!! Help!

Gang,
I need some advice...

I have a 1968 charger with a 383 with a bone stock Carter AVS with the stock choke setup.  I recently installed a new valley pan intake gasket with the heat crossover holes blocked off. I did this for three reasons.  First, the paint was cooking off the intake due to the heat from the exhaust crossover (this was annoying me).  Second, I thought I was having a vapor lock issue so I wanted to eliminate the heat from under the carb.  Lastly, I wanted the increase the horsepower.

So here's the problem.  It takes an eternity to get the choke to disengage because not enough heat is going through the intake.  The only way it will disengage is by driving it for 20 minutes, then parking it to allow heat to creep into the intake.  On cold days, the choke will reengage after all of this as the cold air cools the intake down again.  I've adjusted the choke so the choke barely engages on cold days.  It does increase power though!!

I've noticed there are several electric chokes available on ebay here....

Will these work in place of the heat choke in the intake?  This seems to be a simple solution.  Has anybody ever done this before?  Here is a pic of my current setup.

cant tell you if any of those choke setups will work but I can tell you I drilled 2 3/8" holes on my block off just for this purpose & the choke is still a bit slow.

Also the choke itself IS adjustable.  You can loosen it up a bit to come off faster but its not much of an adjustment....

Why not just eliminate the choke? I had no choke on my holley or my tq and as long as you feathered the throttle for a bit on startup it would be fine, mind you I drove the car in 20-30 degree weather.

The only way your going to get a later model choke in there is change to a later model intake to match

if you think your having vapor lock issues put a thicker base gasket under the carb then adjust the choke to fit

Thanks!

Is there a way to convert this carb to electric choke without trying to replace the choke in the intake?  Can I put the mechanism ON the carb?  Is there a kit for this?

By the way, I tried to run the car without a choke and it's dificult in the winter (summer is no problem).  I like to drive the car to work sometimes in the winter before the snow (in the teens sometimes) and I like being able to start it up and drive off.

It looks like it would be fairly easy to mount an electric choke unit from an aftermarket AFB/AVS on the factory carb but looks can be deceptive. In order for the carb-mounted choke to work it needs vacuum for the pull-off and to circulate air inside the unit, even if the mounting tangs are drilled/tapped, drilling the vacuum hole won't be so easy.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Why not go with a manual choke? I have one on my 68r/t. Works great!  :2thumbs:
