But what does tubbed mean? I've seen a Challenger I like for sale but the description says it's been tubbed? Thanks for any help

moparsons

It basically means they've cut out the rear wheel wells and installed bigger ones (tubs) to accomadate a larger wheel and tire usually for drag racing.

the short answer? Seen those cars with the big fat rear tires? They have to cut up the wheel wells, the trunk, and the rear end to make em fit.

Not all tubbing is created equal.  There is spring relocating, tubbing a car up to the framerails, or a full "back-halved" car.  The last one involves basically cutting out the frame/floor of the car from the backseat to the rear bumper, and fabricating a new underside from scratch to fit the giant rear wheels.

Which is one thing I can never understand....If those Mustank Boys can hook on a 10 1/2" tire, run in the 8's in the 1/4 mile @ well over 160 MPH, WTF would anybody NEED 33X22X15's?

so you can do the same time without having to spend $20,000 more on your engine.

IMHO there have been a lot more fully-backhalved cars for style than for substance over the years.  I've never liked the trend.

Can this the way the car drives on the street? If it's running regular tyres

IF you can find regular tires that big...it's still a lot of big and heavy rolling stock, so unless the engine is putting enough power, it'll be pretty slow.

The springs have also been moved inboard to accomodate the previous massive tyres, is this a big problem?

bull

Don't listen to these guys. They've got it all wrong...

I call BS..It's all for show..Only Top Fuel cars NEED those huge rear tires. If you can't hook it on 10.5 tires, you need to spend more time getting the power to the ground rather than making 10 bazillion HP..

my 67 is only 1/2 tubbed but every single person i meet in it says "man I like the wheels"  my car was ment to have skinny 1967 era tires and the wheelwells are pretty small, so for me there was no second thought. mopars look awsome stock but I really enjoy the modified world.  just my opinion..

Mini tubbing has been done for longer than I've been into cars, to improve traction, install larger wheels/and or tires, but 33X22X15" tires is to Simulate "Pro Stock" or "Funny car" race cars. just like a HEMI, big 'ol honkin' 8-71 Blowers sticking out the hood, and HUGE rear tires, round here, you pull up with any of this sh*t and your car don't run the time it "appears" like it should run, you better be ready for some "Friendly" ribbing...

Wouldn't anything friendly about the ribbing I would give them.

Big ass drag tyres (oops sorry TIRES) for a street car is just plain stupid! IF the car is capable of running blistering times down the 1/4 then have these tires for when you go to the track and not for the street. There is no need for them on the street and "normal" size tires would be sufficient. There is nothing wrong with having a bit of "meat" on the rear end, but no need to go and get tubbed UNLESS it is used for the drags  :Twocents:

Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid!

Bobs69

Normal?  Sufficient? What does that mean!  I think I'd like to tub mine someday, but only slightly so when you open the trunk nobody could tell

mikesbbody

JMF, no stupid questions stupid Answers...well  ;) I personally like the Pro Street look sure, a lot of it is for show but who cares?
Your car should be done the way YOU want it to I could never afford the Pro Street look I think if you gonna go Pro Street go all the way Tubs, Supercharger, Roll cage, Fuel Cell etc I can't stand a car with a Supercharger with "normal" sized Tires. (doesn't look right IMO) It's not all about if you car can run in the 9's or 10's or how much H.P you have. :Twocents:  Here are a few pics all 3rd gens.

There is something to be said for having enough grip to hook up easily.

Sure you can theoretically get 10.5 slicks to run 8s under ideal conditions (which often includes some kind of electronic engine management software to limit the low-end torque these days).  But that doesn't mean the car can reliably hook when you're just screwing around on the backroads for fun.  The HUGE rear tires allow it to consistently do what the smaller slicks can do occasionally.
