Air line regulator and filter

What are you opinions on the combo regulator/filter setups? I am setting up my air system and need it rated to 175 psi with 1/2" lines. I found a Wilkerson combo unit at Grainger and was wondering if having them together is the way to go or not.

Spend your money on something better ,here is what I'd suggest

http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/sharpe-606b-air-control-unit-filter-6730-p-11931.aspx

I've had two pairs of Sharpe 606 filters for decades on two compressors, (pair per compressor)  and don't plan on changing or upgrading. the 606 filters were around $60 each and don't have regulators, but 606b in the link has one if you're scared to run full pressure,  I run 175 straight off compressor and regulate pressure at the gun, otherwise all air tools get the full 175

also what ever regulator /filter  you decide on  ,  plan on putting a couple of  extra water traps  between regulator  &  compressor !  in the lowest run of the air line  :Twocents:

So with the 606b you would use the regulator port only if spraying and otherwise run the full 175 psi to DA sanders, inline sanders, etc.?

694speedRT the one you posted is almost like the ones we run on the air intake on the CNC machines at my work but that is the final step before it gets to the machine we have it ran through alot of bigger filters regulators and air cooler before it gets to that last filter. i would suggest something like elite linked it would do much better then the one you linked make sure whatever you get is made for removing oil/water and possibly run it through a second air filter regulator setup you want nothing but clean air when spraying

There's cheaper alternatives

If you use this combo, make sure to have a separate regulator/filter and air hose for doing body work and paint, because it has oiler, but I still wouldn't trust this type of filter when painting

Isn't that one only rated to 150psi? I don't want an oiler anyway.

Oiler is there but you don't have to put oil in it (it's optional)
I'm running similar setup in my garage. There's no air tool that runs at over 90 psi. Maybe a sandblaster.

I realize the air tools can run at 90psi but my compressor produces 175psi and that regulator is only rated to 150 psi.

I used this diagram to lay my system out:

http://www.tptools.com/StaticText/airline-piping-diagram.pdf

I bought my regulators and filters from the local Parker Hannifan dealer.  I looked at the Harbor Freight stuff and, as you say, it wasn't good above 150PSI.  I used 1/2 inch black iron as the run along the ceiling was only 20 ft.  Warning---the Parker Hannifan stuff is expensive but probably as good as you can get.

I didn't have good luck with that HF air regulation stuff. Crapped out after one year.

Adjust your compressor's cutoff switch to stop at the lower pressure?

I finally have a nice big 2 stage compressor and want to sandblast, DA, etc.  I will not likely even be painting(maybe some primering though) with the setup as we have a paint booth in another building. I am not really worried about spending a little more to use this compressor's potential. I have all the lines run now and have been testing for leaks. I will likely order the Sharpe setup mentioned above. I am probably going to hook up the new regulator and filter setup to be portable so I can use it in the paint booth as well.

Sounds like you have a big place... I don't know how long your plumbing lines are but having the regulator at endpoints (workstations) is the way to go as air pressure drops just like water pressure over their length. So you get better regulation by having it closer to the tool. Having a portable setup helps since you don't need to pay for one at each endpoint. Just put a quick disconnect at each workstation and snap in your regulator setup when you are there! I did that in my barn/garage and it worked out great. :2thumbs:

I talked with a guy at PIVCO and ended up ordering 2 Sharpe 606's like elitecustombody suggested. They are rated to 200psi even though there website says 160psi. He didn't recommend the 606b because the regulator is not a high pressure unit and would eventually fail. He told me to buy a Milton 1114-8 with 3/8" NPT ports to match the output on the 606 filters. Overall a good guy and glad I called him.

Thanks for the advice guys.  :2thumbs:
