Hello everyone, my fuel gauge always reads empty but I know the gauge is not the problem because when i turn on the car the gas gauge hand moves a very little bit. I got a replacement float, my question is, is it a hard job to replace the old one? Can anyone tell me what needs to be done.

Thank You!

terrible one

To just replace the float is not hard at all. Simply turn the lock ring counter clock-wise to release the sender (flat head screwdriver and a hammer works well for me) and snake the sending unit out. Then you'll see that the float literally just pops into place . . . once you have it out it will literally take 30 seconds to switch the floats.

I had the same trouble in my 73 only it was  not just the float but the armature broke off in the housing...still fixable but i just swaped the whole thing was easy...

Thank you for the replies. Before I do it I was just wondering. Is it recommended to drop the tank or could it be done easily enough without dropping it?

Thank You

You have to drop the tank....less fuel the better. After you get in there you may be replacing the whole unit. They turn to rust after 40 years.

You might have enough room on a 3rd gen to remove it without dropping the tank. Worth a shot.

I did not have to drop mine. I think you di have to remove the vent hoses though. Its a tite squeeze but easily doable.

Just replacing the float is a wast of time, when you can buy a new one off ebay for 50 bucks. ebay Item number:   170577428989. I got mine from this same guy 10 years ago and it still works fine. Oh its best to drop the tank for your first time. The lock ring comes out easy but its a bitch to put back.

:iagree: After you take off the straps and unhook the lines and the wire what else is there to take off? I would remove it and inspect the tank and maybe even clean it out since your going through all the trouble  :Twocents:

Yes you can replace it without removing the tank but I would spend the extra time and drop the tank. Be a good time to flush any crap out of the tank and check the condition of the tank as well.

All these replies have been great! I haven't had a chance to do anything though because it has either been snowing or 20-30 under the freezing mark around here (NY). I might have a chance to do something Friday. Thanks again guys.
