Old Car Weekly article is incorrect.  Lee Roy Yarbrough drove a Talladega with a 427 tunnel-port engine at Daytona in February, 1969.  Neither the Spoiler II nor the Boss 429 had been built in enough numbers for NASCAR to approve for use at that time.   Both Lee Roy and Cale Yarborough switched to the Spoiler II for the race at Atlanta on 3/30/69.  That was also the first race the Boss 429 was eligible.  Cale won.  Later in the year, Lee Roy switched back from the Mercury to the Ford, winning a total of 2 races with the Mercury and 5 with the Ford for the 1969 season.
