Will a '68 Dana 60 fit on a '71?

I've currently got a 8 3/4 rear on my '71 with no suregrip and drum brakes. I'm building a 512 stroker with a 5 sp manual behind it an I want to beef up the rear. I know a guy that has a Dana 60 rear on his '68 that's been recently rebuilt with suregrip and it has disc brakes. He's getting rid of the whole package for $1200 and I want to jump on it, but I'm not sure that it will fit my car. My understanding is that the 2nd gen Chargers are wider than the 3rd gen. Will this rear end fit?

Thanks again,

Adam

Yep,

It will work but your going to need to move the perches, also its going to be a little more narrow so you might need to work on getting your rim backspacing correct.

Does moving the perches require cutting and welding?

yes.  the 68 rearend is shorter than the 71, so you will need to check your backspacing on your rim/tire combination to ensure the tire does not rub against the leaf spring.  The distance is not that much, but your rear wheels will be set further inside than your front wheels just because the 68 rearend is shorter.

So do you guys think I would be better off just putting sure grip in and adding disc brakes to my 8 3/4?

FLG

Without slicks i dont think your going to break the 8 3/4. If your going to use slicks get a Dana. Cass (Dr.Diff) builds em brand new to your specs, even has a disk brake setup for em...both the Danas and 8 3/4's.

So what would say if I said I wanted to get the Dana 60 then use a spring relocation kit to move the springs inboard so I can fit some fat tires in the rear? I figure since the Dana 60 already has the suregrip and disc brakes, it would end up costing me the same and since I would have to move the perches anyway, I might as well move the springs while I'm at it. That being said, will this kit work?

(you'll have to scroll down to see the kit I'm talking about)

Is there anything else I'll need to do this?

Yep those are fine

Mancini has em a bit cheaper as you can see, and i personally have never dealt with jims but have plenty with mancini and never had issues.

just search jimsautoparts on this site and you will then go to mancini.   jims has a bad rap, and decidedly so... they have terrible customer service.

Thanks, guys. I've decided to stick with my 8 3/4. I'll probably end up relocating the springs for more tire clearance and I'll be talking to Dr. Diff for some sure grip gears. I think the rear disc brakes will have to wait until I can save some more $$$.
