quick question im kinda new to replacing body panels ,what is the best way to  grind down welds after replacing a panel ,do u use a deburring tool or a grinder and or sander  i figured maybe a combo of both ,i just dont want to weaken the metal around the area form grinding it to mutch ,im more worried about blending it with the old metal

I've been using 3M grinding wheels (#01991) on a pneumatic grinder/die grinder to knock them down and then a 6" round sander (60 grit?) to even them out with the panel. Learned that from Brian (1hotdaytona).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

use a grinding disc and and a 36 grit or 60 grit flap disc youll never see the weld

the 6 inch round sander i have a orbital sander and then a buffer with a sanding pad on it witch woudl work better?

depending on what your buffer is does it have a 7/8 threaded  spindle on it? If it does you can get a grinding wheel that will mount on it from Lowes or home depot  for under ten dollars that will work well. I use the same thing in a lot of places. :2thumbs:

i have a harbor frieght buffer with a 6"hook loop sanding pad on it ,this should work with a 60 grit sand paper on it

It will work but you will use a lot of paper. What you have is great for stripping paint off a car or cutting body filler. :Twocents:

Be careful about the grinding/sanding.  It can add as much heat as welding.  Keep your sheet metal cool to prevent oil canning/warping!!

In addition the the original question above, I have just bought a 68 318 Charger XP29, there is rust but very minor, I'm thinking patch panel will do the job. When I install the patch panel do I weld completely around or do I put on with a bunch of spot welds?

vancamp

stitch weld it (or basically a bunch of spot welds) and alternate  your welds or cool with compressed air to minimize warping the panel
