Been looking for a 1969 charger (Canada) and seems like we must pay more than the same car in the US even taking into account the exchange that is near par these days. What gives? Couple of 318 chargers that are restored southern states cars going for $30,000. Is this a fair value for these cars given the specs, 318, current economic times ect, ect?
Would like your thoughts, don't mind spending the money if these are fair values.
Thanks

I agree with you.  Seems like everything that crosses the boarder passes a magical line which increases the price 50%.  I bought an ATV in the States a couple of years ago when the Can$ was above the US$ and it was pretty easy bringing it across the boarder.  Just make sure you have the paper work in order.

Cars new and old are always more expensive here. That price does sound high though. Good luck with your search and don't give up.

There was a real nice restored tipple black 69 r/t for sale outside of montreal for 40K a month or so ago. I wouldn't pay 30K for a 318 car. 383 4 speed maybe if it was real nice.

Yes everything up here is at least 40-50% higher no matter what it is.

QuoteYes everything up here is atleast 40-50% higher no matter what it is.

Why is that?  What does it cost to import?

seems like they know how much i would cost to get XX goods up here.

Example

I bought a set of AMD full 1/4 panels. They cost me $1750 here picked up at the AMD distributor.

I could get them for say $1350 USD a set in the US

add

$100 shipping
$108 ( 8% exchange in money)
$296 (~19% import fee as not made in north america)
$219 ( 12.5% sales tax)

1350+100+108+296+219= $2073

Those $ 1350 1/4 panels are $2000 once they are landed so $1750 looks like a "deal".

Importing anything if being shipped UPS or fed ex you get raped. Like if its a $100 item figure paying UPS a $80 broker fee at the door.

If you have to have stuff shipped up here in the end gonna be $$. Any retail place in canada knows they have us by the nads.

Taxes are a killer here to support the socialist programs never mind the base price is already more expensive. Please don't think the health care is "free" as it really isn't when you figure all the money the government collects from us threw income and sales tax. Plus the health care has ridiculous amounts of back log and most service is way better across the border.

I work for an insurance company that sells travel insurance and deal with many hospitals across the US and Canada. When the owners brother required treatment for prostate cancer he went to a private clinic and paid.

While a deal on a finished charger in the US is less expensive. To get it across the border and registered here you'd have to pay the 2 sales taxes on the value the car is estimated being worth. Has to be evaluated by a legit appraisal company. Inspections up here before you can plate it.

For sure they have to fill their pockets with tax money.

Another reference for price comparisons
Today in quebec gas is $ 1.09 per liter IE $ 4.12 Canadian for a US gallon
2L of milk $3.89 IE $7.35 CDN for a US gallon

Ya even for a project car we pay more here then someone in the states. I guess that why people import car for the south.

Yeah we always get screwed. I paid $220 for a rear valance from AMD for my Charger. Fedex tried charging me $100 for customs charges. Yeah right! ::)

There was a 70 RT locally with original drive train burnt orange car. Needed all even a frame rail. Dude wanted 18K!!!  :o back in 2008
picked up my 70 rt south of the border for less than a 3rd of that and solid frame rails. 440 was gone had a 383 in place :(

on another note here is a nice looking car with a 383 and edelbrock heads for under 30k

I don't know what the fuss is about...I've brought car in from the States, and it's a piece of cake.  You have too watch what State you buy from though, cause some want you to pay the State tax even though you are exporting to Canada.  The 13% tax sucks, but it is essentially same process as buying a car here locally from a dealer....taxes, inspections..etc..  There is no real difference, so wherever you can get the best deal, the tax man will get his cut.

I've been seeing a few nice R/Ts at or below the $30K mark. I'd say a 318 car in top shape is pushing the limit at $20K.

Where are you at Dude? There is a 70 Charger in the local internet trader for $13k with fresh paint etc. Cars around here are usually in pretty good shape too.

Hi Sheldon,

I'm near Ottawa. I have been looking for the past couple of years, most cars for me are located about 400km away near the Toronto area. Pretty much stuck on the 69 only.

I m west of Montreal about 15-mins from the ont border. Most of the cars Ive seen around are about that my came with new 1/4s and truck floor(ever if it wasn't the right one). And I have all new front end parts, carpet and exhaust. I got mine from a guy in Cornwall.
