hello

i'm new but not to mopars. im mainly a import guy however dad basicly got me to like mopars as a kid. yada yada yada.
while i dont currently own a charger of any kind, i share ownership of a 71 plymouth rr, and am building 91 s13 240sx.
but im sure you dont want to hear about that.

my question is about slant sixes and thier ability to be used as a daily driver. say in a 70 charger with a 3 speed autotragic. if the six had an overhaul, and proper adj. to the carb. and trans. (with a highway gearset) what kind of mileage could i excpect? i presume that a three speed manual or four would get better. right? how sluggish would it be on the street? how had can you beat the slant six before it dies, if it does?

(i know a 70 charger isnt the best daily, just thinking aloud here and trying to get some input.)

thanks

Mike DC

IMHO old car projects as a whole cost too much for mileage to be a huge concern.  If an extra few grand a year is a deal-breaker then you really can't afford the project.

You would probably get better mileage with a good, fairly stock 318. The body and suspension on these cars is pretty heavy. You kind of need some torque on your side, especially if you are stopping often and or dealing with hills.

I cant answer your question, but any pictures of the 240 or specs. I have a soft spot for them, my next car purchase will probably be one with a Silvia front and an SR20 or RB if I can afford it.

Slant sixes are awesome engines, but wrong for the Charger. You would get over 20 mpg and the motor will run for over 200,000 trouble free miles, in an A body or 60s van that is.

You will hate every minute of a slant six in a B body. Way underpowered for a Charger. Like Mr. Lee said, the 318 is the way to go. If putting a new engine in, find a small block (273 to 340), built solid, and you'll be so much better off.   :Twocents:

But when it comes to reliability, the leaning tower of power is bulletproof.  Oh, and "autotragic"??  you need to sit behind the wheel of a well tuned V8 with a sharp shifting Torqueflite behind it.  I'm not saying it offers all the visceral thrills of a manually shifted trans but it sure ain't no slushbox!

I had a hillside hemi in my 69 Charger 500 and i was getting 21 mpg highway.  It was a dog off the line thought and it took about 2 minutes to get up to 65 mph.  70 mph was about top speed..

thanks for everyones input and not flameing me to death, i have a friend that may/may not want to sell his 70 charger project. (basiclly why i joined) while it is a very soild car thier is a lot of work to be done, i figued i might get to pic up my dream mopar oneday for say "the friend price". ::) yeah i know that some mopar automatics are badass (dragracing and such) but there is something rewarding about rowing your own gears.

what she currently looks like,

sold the aftermarket wheels and threw the stockers on to move it around.
so far ive concentrated mainly on footworks/susp. work, after i finish with that i'll be on the hunt for some nice offset wheels with federal rubber mabey even a ps13 (silvia) front.

Google slant 6, look on Youtube etc. There is a very strong following for the /6, and they can be made very stout indeed.

As stated, if the gas mileage is an issue you won't get paid that way. Daily driver, sure. It could be a little aggravating if you live in an area with 0-45mph speeds where you're constantly accelerating and stopping, you'll have your foot on the floor constantly. On the highway, it's great. In the city, it's great.

In the back of my mind there's a Turbo/6 project.
