Back firing problems

Ok, need some help  :scratchchin:. Engine is backfiring while under load, while getting her up to speed.  Running a 750 Holley vacuum secondary. Float levels and idle screws checked and adjusted. NGK plugs and  Firecore wires. Pulled #1 and #2 plugs and they were a nice tan color. Will get to the other plugs when engine cools down a bit. It just started doing this the other day for no reason at all. The distributor is a full  built in unit with the brains inside. Should the coil, Promaster #29440 from Mallory have a direct 12volts to it, or should it run through a ballast resistor first like I have it now.
