Nothing mean ment by the term youngster.

Going to our monthly MoPar meeting, we stopped at a Subway shop for a sandwich.

I go in and there are two 19-20 ish guys working the counter.

"Cool car, What is it, A GTO or something?"

No, its a 69 Dodge Coronet Superbee.

"hmm, never heard of that, it is fast"?

yeah, probably, never really take it over 75-80.  This seems to be one of the standard question from a young auto enthisiast.

"what engine is in it"?

It has a 440 in it.

"440?  Whats that mean"?  deep breath here.

440 cubic inches, ummm 7.4? liters.

"oh wow, mines only 4.2"  he didnt say what he drove.

"how much power does it have"

Probably 400, a stock 440 had from 350-390, it has a 850 Holley and headers with 2 straight 3 inch pipes.

He looked like he didnt understand this.

His buddie came back and general whispering all around "400 wow" etc

"Will it smoke them good"?

Sure

"do me a favor" what that.  "do a burn out when you leave"  What is so exciting about this?  Guess when its not your equipment it doesnt matter.

Hmm depends what traffic is like.

So we leave and traffic is backed up anyway,  so i just motor off.

At least they are trying to learn about real cars.

Think back to when you were a teenager.  How much did you know about the cool cars built 40 years before that time?

not 40 years before but at age 16 I bought a 69 road runner and a 70 charger R/T , I was born in 68 so I was  just a year old when they were built .

I was pretty much a car dork untill i took shop class in Junior high, i was familiar with my parents cars, 68 Dodge van and 64 Custom 880, and my dad would point out cars to me on the road and stuff, and i watched and helped change the oil and grease wheel bearings and help with brake jobs and stuff.

But i didnt recognize the different makes and such till about junior high, 79-82 or so.  Didnt know engine parts till i helped my nieghbor rebuild his motor ('is that a 4 bolt main") pointing at some cam picture and the bolts on the face of the bearings. "No, No, you will understand after you take shop class"

When I was a teenager, I OWNED cars built 40 years before that time  :yesnod:

I get the same blank look from old timers when I talk about ignition, fuel maps, and boost control.  That doesn't mean they aren't enthusiasts.  Not everyone has the same experience & background.  I wouldn't judge.

This 1930 Dodge was 40 years old when I was a teenager. 40 year old cars were all cool back then.
