Ok So my 440 runs a little hot. Its bored 30 over with a mild cam. Now somebody at a local show told me that a fan clutch would help resolve the problem. What do you guys think? Did stock 440s come with a fan clutch? Thanks in advance for the help Dom.

Have you got a fan shroud on there?

Yes I do have a shroud but its the stock one and its very thin.

A clutch on the fan will not change your cooling, if it is the only change you make.

You need a shroud, and you need a fan that fits properly in the shroud. The fan should leave only enough room around the tips to ensure there is no contact between fan and shroud, and the fan should be centered fore-and-aft in the shroud to ensure that there is no leakage or recirculation of air. The clutch only allows the fan to coast below a certain temperature, saving power when it's not needed.

How hot is a little hot? What sort of fan do you have on it now?
What is your initial timing, and total timing? What fuel are you running? Do you have A/C? Do you have an automatic transmission with cooler in radiator?

I run fine while its cool out 170-190 and when moving , but when i stop it creeps up to around 220. I have an auto no A/c, I run super as far as gas, I dont have a trans ,cooler in the radiator, as far as the timing I dont rember where we left it.

That sounds typical of not having an effective fan setup.
What fan is on it now? What's your idle speed?
If your idle is 700-800 rpm try picking it up to 1000rpm and see if the temperature improves.

For what it's worth, 220* does not scare me-but you can maintain it lower at idle if it's lower while moving.

Yep...:yesnod:...you don't have enough air flow from the fan. Do you have a fan clutch now? It could be bad. If at idle it won't hole a piece of paper at the front of the radiator then something is wrong. If you have a fan clutch spin the fan (with the engine off) and if the fan goes around once or more you most likely have a bad one. I put a new clutch in my car and now when I spin the fan it won't even go once around with the engine stone cold.

Ok so as far as i know the car never had a fan clutch and does not have one now. As far as the fan goes its the original one with the car.
