My son is 5-1/2 and he found a large scale General Lee model car from 1981 that i have storing in my closet.  He said, Dad, we got to put that together!  I said, well, i want to keep this one unbuilt for now, but you're probably at the age to start snap model cars.  So i'm taking him on Friday to the hobby shop to pick out his first model car.  He's a pro at building legos, so he should be ready for a model car.  The only problem i'm going to have is walking out of the hobby shop with a couple hundred dollar maxx traxx RC car or something similar for myself!   :icon_smile_big:

I'm thinking a couple RC cars might be in order for a Christmas present for the both of us, then we can set up a race track in the backyard.

Been a long time ago, But I think I was about 9 or 10 ( late sixties time period)

I've actually re-bought a few of the models of the cars I remember building as a  kid

elacruze

I was 8, and the model was a land rover. I was reluctant to put the body on because it covered up all the running gear that I was so proud of.

Well, crap....I can't remember that far back....  :scratchchin:   :shruggy:

<when was dirt invented?>

Brock Lee

I was 5 and I started with glue models. I went through maybe 2 of those big General Lees when I was around 10 and they were a real challenge as they had wires for the engine and a complex suspension. I screwed the first up, but got better with the others.

Well I started when I was 7 years old, but how I got into it is rather a strange way how ever. I couldn't build a single model when I was in my early age of 7, I didn't know jack nothing about them then in the summer of that year I had a real bad pedal bike crash (I won't mention how bad) that landed me in the hospital for a day. After I got out I couldn't put a model kit down what, it was like as if I been building them way before that  :o it felt like . Now look at some of the builds I do today  :o

PocketThunder

Here is the model i was talking about.  1/16 scale.

Hey Pocket, they are re-releasing that kit later this year man. Maybe by that time when they re-release that kit you and your son can get one of those and build one  :scratchchin: :2thumbs:

Road Dog

I was around 7 or so. It was a Sand Crab Dune Buggy. My Dad helped with the harder parts of the kit. This was in 1970 and I still have the model. I'll post a pic tonight.

PICS!  :drool5:

These are from a couple years ago.  About 2 months ago I put a new piston/sleeve/rod setup in it and tore it down completely and cleaned it all up.  It's about 85% aluminum now and has a lot of trick stuff on it, and about $300 worth of upgraded electronics.....  These are the only pictures I have of it on the work computer, I can send you more another time though, if you'd like.

And yes, that is a blown 69 charger body  :icon_smile_big:

I also have a 4tec that's been radared at 67mph  :D

1st model I built was a 1958 Chevy Impala AMT 1/25 sca, @ 1961. hand painted with brush it was probably pretty wretched. but my skills increased to the point where I became quite familiar with modelling putty and custom body work. This all ended up with me doing it for a living as a clay sculptor in the auto industry, 35 years working for Chrysler, AMC, White Motors and a stint working for Larry Shinoda.

Currently, for kicks I am involved in a project where we are creating our version of a 2011 AMC Marlin. 1/6 sca clay to be made into a hard model later on. so I am sill modeling after all these years.

Around 1968 when is was 13.  I bought all the Muscle cars.  In the 80's I got in the habit again and built about 60 more, only this time I put each one of them in a plastic cases so they would last.  They all sit in boxes in the attic. :'(
Though I do have an old original Visible V8 and a newer Visible V8 sitting on a shelf in front of the Charger. :2thumbs:
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.
