Hide aways...

I've searched through the grille resotoration threads and couldn't find anything so now I'm inquiring for some help.

I recently blacked out the hide aways on my 3rd gen.  I first sand blasted to get all the old stuff off.  I then scuffed the intire thing with 100 grit so it would accept paint.  Painted with some trim black, then let is set for 2 days.  It still seems to be flaking off a little too easily.  What would be a good way to prevent the flaking?  Do I need to use a sealer?

Had a friend use Krylon, (think the paint is called Fusion) on his Nissan, for the rear wing and its still looking as it did back then, crappy, but the paint looks good

I just used rattle cans, still holding up fine.

I'm using rattle as well.  Did you put anything over the paint?  Wondering if a non gloss enamel would harden up enough to protect it...  ??

No in fact I didn't even blast it or sand it to begin with because of the grid shape and the fact that most paints wont bond with bare plastic too easily. I wiped the entire thing down with alcohol then hit it with rustoleum gloss black. You might want to use a plastic prep primer since you blasted it then re-coat it again. Check your paint to see if it has an elastomer agent.

For that type of material....you should use an adhesion promoter....Available in a spray can

Aahhh, that's the difference. Mine is a 3rd Gen, cast iron grille. No plastic.

Sorry for the confusion.

tricky lugnuts

Did you prime it before you painted it? Might try that.

Don't forget the edges of the fins are chrome, no way pint will stick to that unless it is completly removed

I'm actually keeping the edges chrome, repainted the rest of the fin stock silver, and only blacking out the actual grill and hide away doors. Looks different, but I like it. I'll be posting pictures soon.
