will sand / media blasting the rearend housing while it is togather / unassembled hurt it ? i guessing yes . but also thinking that it is a sealed unit and the sand should not get into the housing and coz any problems .

that grit gets into EVERYTHING.  I'd drain it, pull the axle shafts and replace with plates cut to fit, and pull the yoke and pinion seal and find something to plug it up with - tight.  then blast.
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

I've had it done that way.
Left it in place when the rest of the shell was blasted. The plan was to go through it anyway. Also needed to leave it as a roller.

make covers out of plywood and attach these with a little sealant before blasting.  I have friend that did this and no grit got inside.  He had cleaned the inside earlier.  Had the whole thing powder coated.

he's right, sand blasting or bead blasting will get everywhere no matter what ha, im still cleaning the shit up from 3 weeks ago out of my garage and its still in my shoes also

Tape a thick plastic bag over the pinion, housing ends, and vent with Duct tape (or even a few layers of masking tape). The sand will just bounce off.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

For the most part I used a wire wheel to clean the housing and only did a bit of sandblasting.

I blast them together and have never had a problem. Just be sure to seal the vent as mentioned and use some common sense not to blow it thru the seals.....You will be just fine.
