440 cars (375hp/480tq) came with 8 3/4 axles. If you had a manual trans and put slicks on it for track use the Dana 60 was better. For the money your going to spend the 8 3/4 axle is a better choice.

If you have an auto trans , street tires like BFG's and do your spirited driving on smooth asphalt roads , the 8 1/4 will last a while. The limited slip will help. The 8 1/4 's I have seen brake had spider gear failures while doing one wheel burnouts with open rearends or neutral drops with floored 318"s.

Don't know about the splines.

I've beaten an 8 1/4 diffy, WITH a POSI UNIT...

like a "Red Headed Step Child"...

and it hung in there just Fine !

Mine was an Auto W/Stall.

Obviously the 8 3/4 would be a better choice,
but,
I wouldn't be scared of the 8 1/4 Posi/Stock Axles on a 408 sb Stroker combo, as long as a Guy isn't using "slicks", on a "sticky" prepped Track, with a "stick/Clutch Dump" all the time ?
