We are looking at buying a used atv. It will be used for getting around campgrounds and mild trail riding. What should I be looking for and what brand is a good one to buy used?

I would prefer an 05 or newer Polaris Sportsman 500.   I think they are an all around good machine.

One of my friends has a newer Suzuki 700.  EFI, automatic, it does 65-70 stock.  It will make it through anything on the trail and it's a workhorse.  He's towed his bobhouse (800lbs) with another 300lbs of supplies inside like it was nothing.

i have an 05 polaris sportsman never had an issue with it other than oil changes and one battery i wold also recommend yamaha's

I have an 06 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 Auto that I bought new.  I use it to plow snow and trail ride.  It's been a great machine.  Other than basic maintenance, I haven't had to do anything to it.  Also have a 2005 Yamaha Banshee and 2006 Polaris Trailblazer.  I wouldn't recommend the Banshee for getting around a camp ground.  The Trailblazer has been a very good wheeler too but it's a little under powered for me.  It's perfect for my wife and stepson. For light trail riding and getting around a camp ground, I highly doubt you would need anything above a 500 and probably not anything with 4 wheel drive.

I have two Honda 4WDs, a 300 bought in 95 and a 450 bought in 2000. They go every where and do everything I want. Very low maintainence, seem to run forever.

I race semi-professional atv motocross and I would recommend a Honda 4x4. Pretty much any will do fine!

What are some problem areas that must be looked at when buying used? Honda or Polaris?
