Yep!! That's the rare early 1967 woodgrain steering wheel. Most '67 models were built with the previous ('66 style) woodgrain wheel. When it comes to Darts - - I'm not sure if a woodgrain steering wheel option was ever offered?  :scratchchin:

Its my understanding that these wheels were recalled because people were getting their fingers caught in them ???  Does anyone really know for sure?

That's what I heard also.

They weren't actually recalled, it's become the nickname for them over the years.  If you look at the 67 Charger brochure, you will see the first version of the woodgrain wheel for that model year.  The first version looks much like the one that eventually came out EXCEPT that in order to operate the horn, there were "flippers" that extended from the hub into those spaces in the spokes.  Somewhat like fingers.  After taking the photos for the brochure, the fear was that people would get their fingers caught between the horn actuating bars and the spoke proper so it was withdrawn from production.  The fix was to remove the slender flipper bars and go to a hub actuated horn but it was very  late in the year when it was made available and it wasn't promoted at all which accounts for its rarity.
It has somehow grown into this urban myth of being recalled because of Ralph Nader shortly after release but that isn't really the case.

if theres only a few dozen of these darts floating around seems like 22 K is cheap...

That is a pretty rare car. The GTS was a late 67 offering that came with only the 383.

Mr. Norm was responsible for it. He was tired of having nothing to compete with the big block Camaros etc stuff so he asked Dodge to throw one in the Dart. They said it couldn't be done. So he had the mechanics at his dealer do it and then called them in to see it.

I had one a few years ago with a non-matching 383.

I remember when you listed your Dart for sale, I had to ignore it or I'd have yet one more project.

A close friend of mine for about 22 years told me about another guy we both know who had a '67 GTS ragtop that was an original 383 car. It was a project car that he didn't have the time or the money for, & also didn't think it was real since it wasn't supposed to have been built by Dodge. My friend tried to convince him how rare it was, decoded the VIN for him & even had another friend of his who was working at one of the Mopar mags back in the late 80's help verify it. The guy who bought it knew it was worth something, (never really paid him, but that's another story) They sold the hood & stuck the big block, A-Body, K-frame in some other POS & scrapped the car. Supposedly one of just a few built.  ::)

I kick myself over that one every once in a while but the wife wanted the ragtop so something had to go.

The guy that bought it finished it and I am pretty sure he took an award at the Chrysler Nationals that summer.

I saw it on ebay a few months later for 30K or so.

I have the same steering wheel in my late build 67 Charger.  (Bryan has offered me $5 for it)

I don't think any of the origional design wheels with the horn flippers ever made it onto a production car.

Its interesting that its refered to as a recall wheel when there is no proof any were ever recalled.
Makes for a good story though.

You kidding me Bull?  I have one in my car.

I guess I misstated myself. I didn't know there was a steering wheel that had been recalled. In this case I guess it never was recalled to maybe it's all moot.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the Hemi Darts?

I saw that car, I would love to have it  :yesnod:  the air cleaner alone sells for over $300.00 seen one go for $500.00.
Rare big block air cleaner for 67-68 big block A-Body's, and some early 68 B-Body's, including two of mine.

Where'd you see it, Dan? Up at the Seattle show maybe?

It's a good looking little Dart for sure. Pretty much a survivor although I'm glad the seller isn't throwing that term around like so many of them do. I wonder if those valve covers are original? I know Chrysler made them I just wonder if they were on the car when it was new?

Nope.

1967:

Mr. Norm developed the first 383 Dart that became the prototype for the factory 383 Dart GTS. Grand Spaulding Dodge purchased additional property for expansion of the dealership.

That really is a good looking wheel. It looks similar to, but better than, the Grant Classic Nostalgia wheel.

I've been offered 1000 bucks on two separate occasions for mine just as it is Chris and I can tell you that it is nowhere near as nice as that restored one.

TUFCAT

I wonder how nice that wheel is under the "Jethro Wrap" ???

Hmmm.....(makes me wonder)......wouldn't it be cool to buy the car and find out this ultra rare steering wheel was perfectly mint as an extra bonus!  :2thumbs:

My Dad took a chance and bought a woodgrain wheel for his 'Cuda at Carlisle about 12 years ago (with the Jethro wrap still on it).

He paid a whopping $10 dollars for it, :icon_smile_big:  When the Jethro Wrap came off, the woodgtrain was 99% PERFECT! :drool5:

It was the deal of a lifetime!  :2thumbs:

Yep, a G note has been the going rate for a long time. I wanted to get one for my car until I found out I'd have to sell the farm to buy it. :D

Those chrome valve covers were very common on HP 383's and 440's back in 1967 and 1968. My '67 R/T 440 came with them, and so did my '68 Dart GTS 383.
