Quick question. Transmission leaks from the front, (presumably from the front seal). For now, can I just pull the transmission off and replace the front seal, slap it back in and hope for the best, or am I wasting my time. The transmission works well. I have a spare transmission that I will get rebuilt later on, just trying to postpone it for a while so I can place some of my financial resources elsewhere on the car.

Whether or not a simple seal replacement will stop the leak depends on the condition of the converter hub and the bushing inside the pump. If the hub is grooved or the bushing is shot the replacement seal will probably leak in short order. You can visually inspect the condition of the bushing once the seal is removed.

Before removing anything, check the converter drain plug (if it has one) for tightness and check the converter hub for cracks if you have to remove it.

Pack the garter spring on the new seal with heavy grease to keep it from popping off when the seal is driven in.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks John. I forgot to mention that while the transmission is out, I will be replacing the torque converter at the same time. The converter in question is almost new.
