carter carb issues

hi all i been away for a long while. my charger is in a million pieces still so this is in reguards to my old crappy but fun 76 camaro. it was asleep for the winter and i awoke it today only to find it unable to stay running at idle. well it will idle if i keep the choke almost closed. it i even touch it a tiny bit (manual choke) it shuts right off almost instantly. i drove the car to the gas station to fill it up with 93 (figured it couldnt hurt) basicly anytime i let off the gas it would just die. when i was driving it and i hammered on the gas it would jump right up and go like normal.

this car has sat for over 5years before and never gave me a problem. last year i woke it up from its 5yr slumber and never had to touch the carb it ran fantastic. i assume this is a carb issue but i dont know anything really about carters so any info would be great! i believe its a 600cfm afv its on a 350 chevy with a turbo 350 tranny btw  thanks, mike

on i messed with the idle speed too to raise it up but it just never seems to stay constant for any length of time. the choke thing really throws me for a loop i just dont get that

...............u can try taking out the air screws, blow some compressed air thru them, install lightly, then back out 1 1/2 turns......crank her up...........kim..........

Is the gas 5 - 10 years old??
I used old gas drained from my charger gas tank, when I removed it, in a lawn mower.  It really played havok on that lawn mower.  I had to drain and flush.

Agreed. If it's been sitting that long with the same old gas in it, that could be a problem. I've seen some cars come out of storage and have all kinds of maladies such as the one you described due to bad gas - even if you pump some new in.

But it sounds like in this case the gas has only been left in there for a winter.

I'd start with a tune up - check your spark plugs, check your spark wires, set your timing, and adjust your carburetor. If it's an AFB it's pretty simple. I've had mine - 625 cfm - for about 10 years and it's really never given me any problems. The two idle screws are in the base out front and the idle speed screw is on the driver's side. Maybe it's a fuel pump or fuel filter issue? Maybe it's the curse of the dismantled Charger saying "Put me back together! Put me back together!"
