What lube (Brand) is recomended

Just had my 4-speed rebuilt and want to see what gear oil is recomended for it. I also just drained the oil in my car and want to see what oil is recomended there also. I generally use Valvoline 10-30, but am open to hear discussions.

So many choices, brands, grades, viscosity, it also depends on the climent you live in, I wound probably choose a 10w40 its a good all around motor oil

For the trans 80 or 90 wt. gear oil or ATF......Stay away from synthetic in the trans....they seem to be happier with the real stuff. The ultimate pick will depend on your climate.

Heard some good about Valvoline with a break in additive. Is that a good idea. The engine was recently rebuilt and has about 1k miles on it. Any particular gear oil recomended? I live in the Southern part of NM with Summers around 110.

80 or 90 for the trans should be fine.

I really just wanted to know if there are prefered Brands on the market that are thought to be better than others. I even heard someone recomend Lucasoil Gear oil for the tranny. Just want the best for my baby is all.

Stay away from synthetic in the trans....they seem to be happier with the real stuff.

Not from my experience, my 833's all loved Redline 75W-90NS synthetic.

John - I thought I read something about synthetic not being the hot ticket for manuals...

Some part really screams for mineral based or something like that. I'll try and find the source of that.....

I see a lot of confusing posts here, because all the guys I know that knew what they are doing that ran 833's and 833OD's ran nothing but synthetics. that includes Chryco.

As for engine oil, first of all, read the sticky about zinc additive if you have a flat-tappet cam.
But for basic motor oil I've always run Rotella, I think the standard mix is either 15W30 or 15W40 although you can get almost any grade.

The problem with new and GL-5 rated gear lubes is the sulfur will eat the soft brass (synchros) out of the manual transmissions over time.  the old GL-3 rated gear lube didn't do that.  Here is a link to Redlines website with more info:  http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7

I've been running Redline MTL in my (jeep and truck) manual transmissions for the past 10 years with great success.  i've also "fixed" a couple of Jeep AX-15 5-speeds that would grind between gears by just draining the old fluid and replacing it with MTL.  evidently, the friction-modifier additives wear out over time and the lube is too slippery for the synchros to grab when shifting.

I know that Penzoil Syncrho-Mesh fluid is also good for manual transmissions and can be picked up at most autoparts stores for around $5 a quart.  a local race shop has the Redline MTL for $11.25/qt  http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/1809/Gear_Oil_And_Transmission_Oil
