I had purchased some torsion bars from Firm Feel and they are marked Left and Right. Which one goes on the Driver side?

And it doesnt matter which end goes forward correct?

Ghoste

The one marked "Left" goes on the drivers side and I would put it so the marking is toward the rear of the car.

no matter if mark is front or rear... torsion works the same, but mounting standarts makes the marking will be visible throught cross member.

Reason for Left and Right torsion bars?

They twist in opposite directions. When the left takes an impact it twists clockwise and the right counter clockwise.

:iagree:

they are hardened to resist that specific direction torsion

I am putting new torsion bars in my 73.  The old ones came out pretty easy for the record.  Anyway, the new ones are marked L & R for the side to put them in, but it shouldn't matter as far as front to back then correct?  They would twist the same direction no matter what.  I just want one more opinion before I put the new ones in.

no matter which side goes to front or rear... wil twist the same direction... like a bolt and a nut, both tight allways CW, no matter which side you decide to tight up. Put it reversed and still will tight CW.

Thanks Nacho.  That analogy makes it clear.  I was trying to over think this.

The ones I got from Just Suspension were not marked, but after you install them, then they would have to be on that side.

yes I found that analogy the best for understandment, without think on physical or mechanic laws, just going to practicity.

interesting! maybe the ones marked are already "indexed"

HPP

Depends on the size on whether they need to be left or right. Bars over 1" in diameter do not require right or left designation.

I talked Dick at Firm Feel about this when I was there last and he said the L and R bars are identical until you use them, after which the L and R designation becomes important. Only after the bars are in place and the tension has been applied do they become twisted in that particular direction. Hence the L and R stampings are there for the purpose of telling you which bar came off which side in case you remove and reuse them.

And regarding the initial post, left is always the driver's side and right is always the passenger's side when talking about cars.

then is what I thought:

I have my bars in but I have a question.  How much forward travel should they have?  Do they need to be tight against the clip in the rear?  I removed the cross member and tapped them into the LCA, then put the cross member in and tapped on the cross member to seat them into it.  But when I  had the cross member to the point of bolting it back in place, the tbar was about 1/2 to 3/4 inch forward from the clip in the rear cross member.  How far forward into the LCA should they be able to slide? The hex shape is buried enough into each end that I can't see it.  Is this a problem?  I know I bought the correct length bar for a 73 as they were the same length as the stock bars.  Any ideas?

Hemidog

Mine has the same travel, I installed new 1" Just suspension bars this winter.
I wouldn't think there would be a problem... The my bars have a longer hex shape head than the originals, and they were the same length.

Nacho-RT74

as far you can fit the retainer clip and car is not streched LOL... I don't think you'll get something to worry about.

of course, some clearence between hex head end and groove to clip, better. and you can check easily how deep is the other end into the LCA
