Just curious what is important to consider about a cam, obviously the lift, and duration, but lobe seperation etc as I have little knowledge on cams.  I was thinking of going with a 292/292 advertised duration moparperformance cam in my 383 with headers and a single plane intake. Any thoughts??? Oh I do have a 2800 stall converter in the trans.

I don't claim to be an expert but I did some research before building my 383. I believe the 292 duration cam is a hydraulic 509 lift with a 106 or 108 lobe center. The power band will be peaky and narrow. It will not like power brakes and will idle very lopey. You'll love the lobe but hate the drivability. I do believe that engine, with that cam, would like a higher stall too. More in the range of a 3500. I personally believe a single plane intake on such a short stroke engine will be hard to keep in the power band also. There are better intakes and cam combos. I may be speaking too soon. You haven't mentioned the compression, head combo, gear ratio, weight of the car, or intended use for the car. Chryco and Firefighter, as well as many others, will have better ideas.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

piston to valve clearance can be an issue although you SHOULD be ok.  up until latly most 383 pitons didnt come with valve notches.  every body wants to dog the old mopar 509 cam now days but for YEARS it was the main stay hotrod cam that went into alot of faster mopars.   i do think there are better bump sticks out there now though.      lots of people on this board seem to love the crower cams.  i also think the converter is a little soft for that cam.  id call a couple cam companies and get thier ideas,   then id call porter racing heads and order what every he sugests,  but thats just me.

The 509 is a lot of cam for a street driven 383....there are much better choices out there. A complete rundown on the combo would help with recomendations. Compression ratio ? Rear end gears ? Type of car and weight ? etc...

Amen...   i was running one in my car and it is just too much for a street driven car with a manual trans....
