Strange 60 axle leak

A couple of years I fitted up a new s60 to my 68, it came with the green bearing setup. I would be lucky to have put a thousand miles on it since then, now I see the l/h side axle is leaking diff oil.
As I optioned for a support rear cover which has the oil level plug to high, I filled the diff with an axle out and filled it just to the bottom of the axle tube.
I have not got around to removing the axle yet, I seem to recall these bearing not having a lip seal but instead what looked to be normal grease covers (I may be wrong, but something niggles my mind).
So the question, has anyone else have premature seal/ bearing failure on a strange unit?
