My Brother is a Mechanical Engineer (White Collar) who started as a Heavy line Mechanic (GM) when he just finished high school. He got tired of busting his knuckles and always having back problems, so he went back to school and got his BA in Mechanical Engineering (all while he had a mortgage and 3 kids) and went back to work for GM. NOW after 12 years he is fed up with the politics's. He says the only one getting promoted are the Minorities.  I told him being white is a Minority these days. haha  :smilielol:

This is not a political thread, but of the NEW GM (Government Motors) pro' and con's.

Just about everyone has something they don't like about their job.   But at the moment, he has a job, and it would seem a pretty decent one too.      I am sure there are other people who would be more than happy to take his place.

Okay, the real subject is the Gov. taking over GM and Chrysler

My sister worked for the Ontario stamping plant as an electrician and moved into the transition team when they were ordered to close. You can't imagine the stories. People in this plant were told that if they wanted to go to school to be retrained instead of transfering to another city or state that they would be reimbursed for 100% of their tuition, And now the government refuses to give it to them because the asshole that was plant manager at the time refused to send in the paper work. Sounds like a lot of corruption and it all has to do with the unions and our government.

Naaaa, nothing unique GM.  It's everything to do with corporate America and corporate politics.  After 12 years he's just burned out on the crap.
Been there - done that.  In a normal economy it would be the time switch jobs to a more favorable situation.  But right now put up and shut up - even a bad job is a good one to have.

As far as minority promotions, it is no where near as bad now as it was mid 80's to mid 90's.   By 2000 you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a woman that had been promoted way past her competency(to satisfy a quota).

BTW, I'm not a misogynist - the cream did remain at the top.
(used spell check on misogynist - if I picked the wrong word,  I mean , I don't hate women..............all the time)
