Yes it can be a stupid question, but preffer to ask

This is an OLD HP camshaft ( you can tell by the number ) when used to be proteted by somekind of coat, maybe a grease...do I need to remove the protective coat from this camshaft ? or do will remove itself once mounted and on the use ?

If I do need to remove befor mount, How ? gasoline ? thinner ? easy off ?

I would remove the coating with brake clean and use fresh moly paste on the lobes/journals/lifter faces before breaking it in.   :yesnod:

thanks.

I will use this cam for couple of months to have a little more fun from my car before the build up I'm preparing. Actually I have a 2 bbls 400 cam I got from a donor engine ( when I didn't know they were different from 4 bbls ). Of course accomplished with new lifters.

I haven't had time to port the heads and make everything at once to build the engine.

Rayzor

just make sure you dont put cam grease on the sides of the lifters as that can keep them from rotating. a bad thing during break in. p.s dont forget the zinc.

Yes!!!...clean that off....thats just there as a shelf life protector....kind of the same thing your local machine shop sprays on your crankshafts to keep them from rusting

Nacho-RT74

well the 474/280 MP cam I got began the rust process... just light surface at some points... had to clean it with 1500 grit sandpaper and brake fluid, then grease it and get it back inside the box
