Tranny leak help

I searched the Forum and found stuff but not sure if we're talking the same area.

My Transmission is leaking at the rear and from the picture you can see where a previous owner has broken the tab off. Tell me is this tab designed to stop the shaft coming out?

It's leaking from around this shaft but I'm reluctant to take the tranny out as it's only just gone back in.

I understand there is an "O" ring on this shaft.

Any solutions of guidance would be very much appreciated.

that is your rear band lever shaft.  it uses one (and sometimes two) o-rings to seal, but o-rings go bad.  I put a bead of RTV around each one after I overhaul them for safe measure.

the tab is meant to be there to ensure the shaft does not remove itself from the transmission.  whoever broke it off did it because they wanted to remove the shaft without removing the tailshaft housing.  seems they didnt fix the leak the first time eh?

in order to fix the issue, you will need to remove the shaft (the broken tab makes that easier), put new o-ring(s) in, lube each o-ring, install the shaft, and then put a bead of silicone around that opening to ensure a good seal.

NOW.. you can just silicone it, but it is leaking for a reason.

NOW.. you just cant remove the shaft, you have to (in order of events):

drop the pan
drop the VB
loosen up the rear band lever
tap out the shaft with a screwdriver or something comparable
remove 0-rings
replace 0-rings
lube 0-rings
reinstall shaft
silicone hole
re-torque rear band to 72" lbs and back off 2 turns
reinstall VB
reinstall pan

easy eh :D

You can stop the leak with no disassembly if you first drain the fluid from the pan, clean the area around the end of the pin thoroughly and then slather on some RTV; completely cover the end of the pin. Allow it to dry overnight before refilling with fluid.

The trick is to have the area surgically clean and have no fluid behind the pin to leak out and break the RTV's bond.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

OK Guys

That a great help.

There was a splodge of sealant around the pin and a bent metal tab held in with a both where the tail bolts on. Still leaked but then it might not have been clean in the first place.
