Will the wrong gears with big cam make the engine load up ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I know I need gears.  2.76 open is what I have now and I want 3.73-3.91 suregrip.  With the 292/509 cam, it wants to run good over 3000rpm.  So, what I'm wondering is since the gears right now are tall, is it not allowing the engine to wind up fast enough for the cam ?   Will this make the carb dump more fuel than the motor can keep up with ?  More or less, is it like running under a constant load and the rpm's not rising fast enough even from 3000rpm to 5500rpm ?    I'm just trying to get a better idea of how the cams work.

Skip, you pretty much hit right....That cam only hits it's "Powerband" above 3000 RPM, so with gears and converter set up for idle to 5500, it won't run good till your engine hits around 3000..Then, it feels like you sprayed it or something....See, the more overlap (Bigger) cam you are running, the further you've moved thew powerband of the engine UP in the RPM Range....Clear as mud now right?

A Stall Converter acts like a slipping trans to allow the engine to reach the "Sweet Spot" where the cam is making good power before loading the engine...Instead of "Lugging" the engine...
