Alarm systems.....

IM curious being the 'charger' the most popular car in history what alarm systems are you guys using if any? Instead of always trying to keep an eye on the car all the time even walking into a gas station what makes you sleep at night knowing its 'safe' from the thiefs?

Do you take the steering wheel, disable battery, or suck all the gas out of it, etc..before bed or during the day?

Alarm systems only keep out honest people. Asked a Car thief one time "How do I keep you from stealing my car?"

Reply: "Don't buy one"...

Heh.  I remember in '94 when I got my '69 I was so worried about people stealing the car that even in the safety of my own garage I had it clubbed, ignition disabled, coil wire removed and hidden, fuel line cutoff enabled, car covered with locks, locks on the hood, wheel chocks CHAINED to the wheels and the garage door itself had "4" separate locks on it INSIDE while being locked outside too.  

Almost 20 years later and I've learned that worrying about the car being stolen is like worrying about dying; it might or it might not happen, no point thinking about it too much.  Besides, it's just a thing and as long as you're insured for the full value of the car it can be replaced.  Also, you could park your car in Fort Knox and if someone wants it badly enough  they will get it.  There's no point stressing out about it.  Hell, life's too short to stress too much about anything...

Have full replacement agreed upon value insurance on the car. Drive it and enjoy, over worry will give you an ulcer.

Having it insured and getting money back and replacing it is acceptable in a lot of cases, but mine is a very cherished favorite possession of my recently passed father that I am restoring as a memoriam to him. It is also something that makes me feel like he is still with me and when I am working on it or riding in it, that part of him is there with me you know? Getting back insurance money and moving on to the next vehicle would mean very little in these types of situations.   

That said, I am EXTREMELY paranoid about the security of the vehicle and always thinking about the possibility of it getting stolen.

You could try a secret kill switch as an attempt to thwart the driveaway thief but sadly, alarms don't do much these days.  They have become so commonplace that even when one does go off no pays any attention to it.  We see it as an annoyance not a warning.

I hate alarms and would never have one.   Nobody pays attention to them and it's just a pain in the ass.

What about the hidden GPS gadgets so you can at least find your car if it is stolen? I would think those are pretty useful.

Although Im sure there are other gadgets that today's thieves can use to detect if there is a GPS transmitter and either locate it and take it out or block the transmission.

well my battery is in my trunk with a battery cut off switch (push-pull) so if i get real worried, turn it off, and take the rod with me. But i also use the insurance method, and the "dont park it anywhere stupid" method of automotive defense. You could always Lojack it if your really worried about it. then you'll be able to go find it again if they do take it.

I'm gonna go with a couple of Yosemite Sam "Back Off" mudflaps and a window decal that says 'Insured by Smith&Wesson".    Also that adds resale value to the car, especially here in the South.
