Has anyone ever thought of making a registry for engines? A web site where if you have a non numbers matching engine, you could enter the number from the block, and if you were looking for an engine, you could enter the last digits from your vin and see if a hit comes back? I know I would certainly buy someone a replacement motor for the numbers matching engine for my car.. I mean a 440 is just a 440 unless its the one that belongs in your car.  Same with a hemi, I'd buy someone a replacement for my original motor... Just a thought, not sure if it has ever been done.

It happens, I know of a few cases.

There is a scam in place too, a guy sees someone looking for block xx xxxxxx, so he grinds the numbers off one he has then restamps your numbers into it & tries to sell you the block.

If anyone does contact you this way, get a photo of the numbers on it & have someone that looks at them a lot check them for you.

One T/A owner was contacted by one of these scammers, & he sent the photos to me to check out. It was an obvious re-stamp. His real engine surfaced about two years later & he was able to get it.

I think it's safe to say the actual car registeries deal with missing engines too....I know my registry does :yesnod:

not to be a bugger, but my 440 isn't the original for my car... and no offence.... i know i'll piss off some people here.... but im not going to post it's numbers anyware, you see, it's a bit far from stock, and I have a bit of money invested in it. It runs great and is extreamly reliable... therefore, Im not going to sell it to anyone.

Everytime you build a motor you take a change, if it's going to work, and if it's not.

Am I the only one who thinks lik ethis? or am I just an ass..

o.k... I KNOW im just an ass, but what about in this case ;-)

I know if my original motor was in another car and was built into a 10k motor I'd gladly replace it. Same goes for the motor that I'll put in my car. I'll post up the Vin and if the rightful owner wants to replace it I'd have no problem with that.

To each his own.

Sure, but what if the engine was pulled from a stolen car? Now what?

Well, if someone stole YOUR original engine, you would want it back, right?  ;)

Better to find that out on your own than to get caught with stolen property.  :Twocents:

I would like to have my original engine..only problem is as the previous owner story goes, it was blown up.  However, I would part with my current engine for a crate..my car will never be original, but if I can help make someone else's original, that would be okay.

I have reunited 2 '69 Chargers with their original engines so far...

I have about 15-20 other engines (383, 440, Hemi) looking for their rightful owners as well....

Keeping a registry can get expensive after a while.  :P

Mine was blown back in the 70's and the transmition threw a gear through the casing, the transmition came out a Charger the went for a dip in the drink. The motor came out of another 69 Charger but did people really swap out 440s? Also I doubt they'd want it, it's bored, cammed and high compression and I wouldn't want it to leave.
