How frequently do you have to re-do things??

It seems like I hardly ever get anything done the way I want it (or the way it should be) the first time.  I am getting tired of having to re-do things.

Quick example:  I have an air cleaner cover that I took in for media plasting.  The underside was in great shape, so I just wanted the top preped for the wrinkle paint.  The guy blasted the whole thing.  Ok, so I get to paint both sides.  I paint the underside with semi-gloss, order up the wrinkle from Eastwoods.  The wrinkle ends up being bad, cause when I put it on, chunks of crap sprayed out as well.  I cleaned it all of with mineral spirits and now I gotta find Krylon to use, and try again.  I can give dozens of examples of re-dos like this.

Do I suck, or do you guys have this happen to you, too?

I guess when you are doing most of the painting, rebuilding , refinishing, installing, assembly for the first time, it shows.  You kinda learn as you go.

I find I am doing that alot while restoring my charger. Most recent example: I decided to replace both lower rear 1/4 panels. When I cut out the panel I see the trunk extensions and trunk pan are boarderline (no holes just scale and rust). I weld in the new lower 1/4 which attaches to the old trunk extension at the bottom. then I get excited and put some dura glass over the body work & welds. After a week of second guessing the trunk pan & extensions, I decide to replace everything. So I remove the trunk pan, remove the extensions & grind down my welds to the old extensions and chisel it apart trying not to damage my new lower 1/4 panels. Then I grind off all the dura glass and start over.

Oh please.  My restoration thread about my car is about doing and redoing things.  Way to many items to list that I had to redo because of myself or what others did for me, or sold me.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

yeah  lots of  times when i was doing my restoration !!  every re-do was from crap  repoped parts ,  did not fit or look how i wanted !!   oh & rebuilt power steering box , that was crap , had me rebuilding 3 power steering pumps , , don't ask  :shortbus: ,  took that dang steering box off 3 or 4 times !!  would not have been such a biggie , but the car was all built up at that point ,  should of just gone to firm feel in the first place  :slap:  , weather strips were another one !! spent  hours adjusting the glass , doors & stuff !! even left the door shut for nearly a year , another don't ask  :yesnod: ::) still had to slam them , ended up cleaning up my original stuff !!  as they were almost  new looking !!!, & no leaks !!  but you do a complete nut & bolt resto , so you think hmmm new  weatherstrips  :yesnod: , master cylinder that was crap , could not get it to bleed !! still kept sucking air  :brickwall:, repop fuel sender !  ended  taking the original one  to bits & using the resistance wire thing out the original one  , but then found out it did not fit , so derusted & cleaned the whole  thing & fitted to to the repop one ! , repop parking/turn signal lamps !! had to re shape them as  they stuck too far out & did not follow the contor of the hole in the front valance, even with switching RH to LH & visa versa :scratchchin: :rotz:
there are  a few more !!  will post up when i remember them all  ::) ;D

If I would have mentioned all my re-do's in my projectthread it would have been 50 pages by now and without them I would have cruised around in the car all of this past summer. My dashframe took me 3 months to get painted in a satisfied way. :brickwall:

Well, thanks for the cheer up, guys.  :icon_smile_big:

I think.  Many more re-do's inmy future. :-\

But that's what makes having the old cars great....if it was easy, everyone would do it!

And how about when you take a part or something like that in for service, or rebuild, and you don't get the results you wanted?

I took my original radiator in for a boil out and test/fix if needed.  It ended up being in nice shape........and he painted in black.  Forgot to tell him not to.  I was going to do that anyway, but my work would have been a little neater than the shops.  The thing was dripping paint, and he didn't even take off the overflow hose, just painted right over the top of it.  Sheesh.

I didn't make that mistake again with the driveshaft when it got new u-joints.  They said, "yeah, we would have painted it black."

all my past project many times :S

Thats why this time any metal that needs to be replaced will be new AMD metal. No fixing rotten dented metal. The extra dollars for new correct fitting metal will more that pay for itself in the end. Could save a lot and get some sheets of metal and a gallon of filler and 2 years of patching and welding, but in the end it would boil out down the road and i'd have to tear down for another resto hence pay a resto twice.

Back N Black

Most of my re-do's was prep and paint. I usually found out the hard way what paints, primers and clear coats don't mix.

I have to re-do almost every project I start on...not just the Charger...for some reason it is everything...The first tme around never turns out the way it was supposed to  ::)
