in the process or restoring the steering wheel.....the copper ring which the wire is attached to....it appears there was a a grommet of sorts that was in there....but it crumbled from age so now its just the ring against the steel center of the wheel.....should i make a new grommet by putting some "make a gasket" in there or leave it as is...is the grommet preventing a grounding situation that mopars are so famous for ..lol

yeah had the same problem , when i done mine  :yesnod: no body repops & or sells them as  far as i know ,  what i done was made  one good one out of  two by sticking  pieces together  , then dipping it in a liquid rubber stuff ,  once drip dry  , i cut out some insulating tape  , just to be on the safe side  :yesnod:, the right shape , & stuck it on ! once in place with the cancling cam spring ..  better than new !

it sure would be nice to see what its suppose to look like.....i hardly had any left at all.......for orientation purposes the wheel is laying down on the grip side........ it suppose to be sandwiched between the underside of the copper ring and the wheel....or in the "center bowl" part of the copper ring around the center shaft???

1charger69

hmmmm  i was pondering a fix...wonder if an o ring would work in there???

1charger69

ahhh...i was able to nudge that tension clamp off and took the copper ring out and cleaned it very well.....now my quetion will be clearer now that i can actually get at now.....where exactly would i put the bushing???  the only part that should be making contact with anything should be the spring cam..correct?? :brickwall:

o ring  hmmm ,   don't think you would get one wide enough ,  cut out a disc of rubber might work :scratchchin:
do you know  what i forget  how it goes   , was a few years ago  since i done mine  :yesnod:  , i'll have a look for the left over parts & spare wheel i have somewhere , &  take some pictures , if i cant  find the bits  , i'll whip the steering wheel off the charger  , when i get chance  :scratchchin:

just had a thought .. there is a guy on here  , that restores steering wheels , Doug Lepek  i think  , sorry doug  if i spelt your name wrong & you see my post

he  might have spares :scratchchin:

thanks...it would be much appreciated.....the problem is that i have no idea what it even looks like...lol...i thought about using that spray grip stuff they use for tools and spraying a rubber coating over the  copper ring and mask the area off for the cam...would that work???

1charger69

i think i got it...i cut trace out  of the copper ring out of some extra amp covering (tolex) and cut the ID smaller and then cut relief cuts all the around the ID so when i put the capture ring back on, those relief cuts folded around to the inside of the copper ring so its also sandwiched between that and the capture ring.....nothing copper is touching the steering wheel...cross fingers i guess..lol :2thumbs:

Basically the only part of the copper that is not covered is just the area that the horn contact roller would touch. If any part of the copper touches the steering wheel or spring clamp, it will cause the horn to blow constantly.
