Restoration Bobbish Style

Ok, here is another Bobbish restoration. I had a set of rear tail lights that most would have tossed a long time ago. I thought I would give them a shot at a low cost make over. Between the rear quarter trim and the lights I have about $16.50 invested.
Again, I sanded them with some pretty gritty sand paper.
Filled the areas were the chrome had peeled and left a edge with again, JB weld. Sanded until it was smooth to touch. I brush painted the areas where the light bulbs go and the black area. Don't worry about brush marks because the lens will cover it anyway. Once the silver and black had dried, about 48 hours I tapped it up to spray the rest of the light with the metallic paint.
The type metallic paint I got fills in very well so you don't have to have picture perfect smoothness. Here is before and after. Like I said, it's not show quality but on a budget it's great.
Once they have dried completely for 48 hours they will be clear coated.

Nice work Bob! My 73 is a "driver" so Im doing these type of budget minded upgrades. My taillight housings also need some work, and after seeing how good yours turned out, I plan on doing the same with mine. Great thread!

Keep up the good work,
Jason

BTW...Please post a pic after clearcoating them.

Thank you Jason. I stopped by the local body shop and he is going to clear coat all my pieces for free. I was going to spray them myself with some off the shelf clear but figured his clear would hold up better and be a little more resistant to chips and fading.
I'll post the pics after the spray.

Sounds good, Bob....I was thinking that myself, if you could clear coat it with a catalyzed clearcoat, should hold up real well.

Jason

Ok, I picked up the left rear light yesterday afternoon and dropped off the left. It came out even better than I expected. Sorry about the glare. 2 coats of clear.  :D

Bob

Thanks all. The second light I dropped off did not have the brush strokes show up. I guess the paint was not mixed good enough. When I'm done these I think I'm going to do the original lights. It's one of those things where you learn the little things on the first set.
Again thanks.

Bob

Well, I would say I have about 2 hours total in the lights.
Here is the other one done. Came out better than the first and it was in worse shape.
I'm happy with them.
