Carfax is an organization that only has reports on DOCUMENTED claims. In other words.  If someone wrecks their car, and decides for the sake of insurance rates to not go up, pay for the repair out of pocket, it doesn't get documented.  Or the old addage  "I have a good friend who can fix that for ya"  Well....no documentation there either.  No paper trail, no foul.  But it does show up pretty well on issues that have been documented.  I'm not sure how early of a year model they go back to though.

and even with documented claims, they're hit or miss.

Don;t get me wrong. It can't hurt but just be aware that they are not perfect.

there was a story on this a few months ago....

Thanks for the reply.... Carfax (from the dealer BTW ) showed clean. Went with AutoCheck and came back with frame damage AND title problems. Saved me some headaches, I'm sure.

i would definitely show the dealer the one with the problems, maybe they won't try to pass it off as clean anymore

You can bet fleet rental cars such as Hertz, Enterprise, and Dollar, among others also do not get reported.  The low 20k miles they have on them when they are for sale on used car lots doesn't mean they haven't been hammered in an accident.

don't trust the dealer carfax either...do your own...

the one we did was vastly different than the one the dealer gave us...that is if your buying it @ a dealer...

Jeff Foxworthy once said that his mother was the typical "little old lady" when she drove her car. Until he caught her doing doughnuts in the rental car. She said "What it's a rental". Most people think that way with a rental. Take it places they would NEVER take their own car.
