Motor getting rebuilt.....Cam question

My numbers matching 383 Magnum is getting rebuilt right now. I believe it is getting bored .30 over new pistons rings bearings ETC. My question is, I wanted to put a cam in it because i love the loopy Idle. I chose the Engle K56 with .504 lift because i love the way it sounds on Chris's car. The engine builder said today that cam is too much lift for my motor and it will idle at 1200 RPM and there might not be enough vaccum. Car is a 727 Auto. Any opinions? He wants to go for a cam with like a .460 lift but I am afraid that is not going to be the sound and performance I want. Any advice would be appreciated!

There is more to consider than just valve lift. What besides a choppy idle are you looking for?

Am looking for some performance but want it to be street friendly and have the sound

The K56 is fine in your 383....no worries. It won't idle at 1200 either  ::) and will make lots of manifold vacuum for power brakes. The Engle cams are fast rate of lift profiles so they idle nice yet make excellent power. Your engine builder was probably confusing it with the infamous 509 purple shaft which is a knarly grind....even in a 440.  :eek2:

If the engine builder is concerned direct him to the Engle Website and show him the advertised and .050 duration numbers. If he still says he can't make it work then it's time to look for another engine builder.  ;)

Exactly - Ron beats me to it...    AGAIN!

The K56 is fine...    if your engine builder can not make it work he is incompetent in his field of endeavor

I suspect your engine builder took one look at the Engle K56 cam's lift and concluded that it was too big, but the lift doesn't tell the whole story. Like already suggested if he looks at that cams specs on Engle's site, he'll probably change his mind about it.

Or go back to his smallblock Chevy's and forget about it.

Well after calling Engle today I went with the K54. Thanks for your thoughts!

Since i am going for the stock look under the hood and keeping the stock intake and carb they thought that would be a good cam for my motor. I believe we talked to Mark at Engle Cams

Thats a pretty mild cam.

Yep, pretty mellow grind....should idle like a little kitty cat, and still roar like a mountain lion.  :icon_smile_big:

Not a bad choice at all....power will just come on sooner and fall off sooner. It will be fine !  :2thumbs:

Was at their shop and saw the sheet laying on one of the work benches for the cam. He ordered a Comp cam 224 Duration .470 lift. Will this lope at idle and is this a pretty good cam?

Thanks!

I have a 292H Racer Brown cam I have had for 25 years still in the box and can't wait to throw that in a 383 with a 4 speed and a set of 4.56 gears!

That cam is almost identical to the K56 that was originally recommended but it won't make as much power due to the lower lift and slower lobe speed. It will run fine in your engine....no worries.

he could always spray it.  :icon_smile_big:

LOL don't know how well that would work out.

Thanks for the opinions. Just want a lope to it, nothing crazy. Should be done and drivable in about a month or so.
