Newbie - Transmission fluid all over the floor!

68 RT 440 - I poured transmission fluid in, started the car, let it run for a bit then tried shifting it into gear. The rear end is up on jack stands. A friend advised that I would have to shift it a bit before it went into gear. Nothing happened. When I got out ALL of the transmission fluid was on the floor. It looks like some of it was leaking out of where the dust cover would go.

Is this a gasket thing? Or, am I in way over my head on this? Yes, I checked the pan and the plug.

Thanks,

aRT

How much fluid did you initially pour in the transmission? In the converter?

Did the fluid level on the dipstick drop after startup?

What is the current fluid level on the dipstick?

With a stock converter and stock pan, a dry unit will take 9 plus quarts. The trans should be started in Neutral, not Park to ensure the converter fills. If the initial fluid level remains the same after startup I would suspect a failed pump.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Just 6T9 CHGR

You said it was coming from the dust cover area....

converter not fully engaged
torn front pump seal
plug missing on front pump
hole in dipstick tube
hole in funnel
loose nut behind the wheel

Pull the inspection cover and try to locate the source of the leak.  :Twocents:

I only added 5 quarts so I guess it wasn't totally dry. The dipstick was totally dry. It was in neutral when I started it.

If it's a new converter, it's possible it could be leaking from bad welds, or the front seal was damaged during installation. But, since you said it wouldn't go into gear, my money is on damaged front pump and front seal.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

Did you sort this problem out? Because I just filled mine up for the first time and its leaking in the exact same spot! Very frustrating..I guess the tranny has to come back out?

You said the plug was in. You did mean the converter plug, not a trans pan plug on an aftermarket pan?

Trans will start to work with about 6 qts in it. Of course it has to stay in the trans.

If fluid runs out of the bell housing while running you probably have a bad seal or pump.

Check cooler lines  Might run down and drip of  the bottom of the bellhousing. :Twocents:

Welcome to the club. All my 727's leak when I park them, regardless of what I do, to try and fix the problem. :brickwall:
Goodluck.
