Hi all i am trying to put my dash in and need a key switch for my 1969 charger. I looked at autozone but they don't sell them. any body know anything about these?  I have a switch but no key. I know they don't work so well with out a key. I'm in the dark about this. thanks for any help! Stephen :shruggy:

The 69 ignition switches are very hard to come by...all the other years are readily available, I'm not really sure why the 69 switches are the bastards to get.

I would suggest Year One, Paddock...places like that

Hemidog

Sounds like he has a cylinder and switch, but no key.

i have 2 of these but i got them with no key. i will keep looking till i find one that has a key. I don't think they will come apart with out a key either. Both of mine are from a junk yard and didn't have a key. i will keep kooking at the local junk yard as that is half the fun building one of these 40 year old cars! :2thumbs:

I thought a locksmith could remove the top and retumble  the cylinder and make a new key.  Have you tried that yet?

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I guess that answers my question.

i just looked at mega parts for a ignition key lock and their listing stops at 1968. i got a email from someone on ebay that has a new one.lock key and switch for 130$ but that is a bit on the high end of life. i'm suprised that someone isn't marketing these as there is a nitch. :scratchchin:

I think I will take my old switch and door locks to a lock smith and get them all changed to work.

Thats what I did.  The ignition cylinder should be no sweat for a locksmith to "rekey" as there are little gates I think they called them that fit the contour of the key.  From what I remember, it cost me something like $20 a cylinder or something to get them all rekeyed.

I was thinking that if you had a complete ignition switch/lock cylinder out of, say, a 69 from the junkyard but no key that you couldn't remove the lock cylinder without the key.  The tumblers are inside the housing of the switch assembly so you can't get to them.  (note that if you had the door lock and the complete ign assy together from the same car then you could easily make a key for the ign since the tumblers are easy to take out of the door lock).  Now it could be that a good locksmith can "pick" the lock and remove the cylinder.  Does anyone know if that is the case?

If I remember right, there is a spring pin that goes into a hole that holds the key cylinder into the the actual switch.  If you got that out, you should be able to just change out your lock cylinder for the ignition switch.
