What do you guys think of the new Jeep Commander?

My lease is up on my Ram 1500 and I need to get a new vehicle..........I luv my Ram but sometimes it is not a practical or convenient vehicle. With 2 small kids and our family living 4 hours away it isn't the ideal travelling car. I was thinking either a Durango (which I really don't like the looks of to be honest) or a Jeep Commander. The Jeep doesn't seem to have as much room in the very back plus from what I am told it is built on the Grand Cherokee platform so it is more car than truck. The Durango on the other hand has a full frame and better towing capacity I believe.

Any comments?

What exactly do you use your vehicle for? ( mean besides the obvious)

What do you tow?

How much do you drive? etc.

I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

My brother in law just bought one on Friday.......nice truck but a bit "boxy" for my taste.....

Drive alot......I am in sales so I am on the road 3 days a week sometimes

I have a 25' boat that I tow sometimes and it weights around 6000lbs.....which the obvious would say the Durango being more truck like would be better at towing. However, I only tow the boat 15 min to the lake so as long as the vehicle has reasonable towing capability I think I would be ok.

buy a durango, youll be happier in the long run

When I first saw the Commander I thought........WTF were they thinkin!............it is starting to grow on me now........even the previous version of the Grand Cherokee was less boxy than the 05 and 06 model currently being sold.

How about the H3?

:iagree:  Thats what i would buy.  Its based on the Colorado frame with the inline 5, plenty of torque, it would handle your boat just fine.  I'm trying to talk my spouse into one for her next car.  She wants a SUV.

Wise move on your part.  The H3 is kinda pathetic.

Personally, if you're gonna be on the road 3 days a week, any benefit you may receive from getting paid mileage will go out the window (or your exhaust pipe).  Personally, I would get the new Ram megacab truck that's coming out with the Diesel engine.

The mileage is decent (24MPG for mine), it'll tow your boat like its not even there, and the Megacab will give your kids plenty of room (the back seat is Limo roomy).

Yes, diesel is very expensive right now, but SUV insurance rates are high, they suck down the fuel (esp. when towing) and you ain't gonna get the kind of resale that you do out of a cummins Ram.  Plus the new Common rail Cummins engine is very quiet.

Thanks for you comments OC.......However one thing i forgot to mention......another reason for not goin with another Ram is that on occasion I need to go out with customers and work colleges....the truck isn't ideal for that either. I currently switch the wife for her car but she works downtown and it is a bitch for her to find a parking garage that fits my truck..... and it is simply not downtown friendly. I think the Ram is out of the question for now.

I just got off the phone with the salesmen I have been dealing with since 1990. I told him I was probably going to go with the Durango. Black loaded Limited w/ the Hemi of course.......I get it Thursday.........yahooooo!!!.......anyone who wants to convince me otherwise has till than to do so cause thats when I will be signing on the dotted line!

Have you SEEN the Ram MegaCab?

This isn't the regular Quad cab.

Go here:

http://www.dodge.com/mega_cab/home_flash.html

This thing has more rear seat leg room than a Durango and the back seats recline...I'm telling you, its like a Limo.

With a 2wd 2500, you won't have any more step-in height tha a 4wd Durango...Just go look at one...trust me on this.

OC, I have seen the Mega Cab at the delaership this past weekend. It does have a huge amount of interior space........4 wheel is a must though.......some of the ramps I launch the boat from are not paved and without 4x4 i would never get out of the water.

bull

I thought the Commander was the H3 when I first saw it. Anyway, there's kind of an unwritten rule in my book that says avoid the first run of any model until they work out the bugs. I don't like being the guinea pig -- I leave that task to other people.

Inline 5?? Sheesh, I didn't know that. What is that, a leftover Audi engine? ::)

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

You don't need 50 grand!........just decent credit and its like a mortgage on a small home!

I would love to see a Mega Cab, but my local dealer STILL doesn't have 1. Why launch a new model without any to see?

do the Durango,
way more luggage room with the 3rd seat up, more pass space in 3rd seat  than commander. Hiway ride is exceptional,  Big fast Hemi, 20+ mpg on hiway I know its ugly I drive one but vehicle performance makes that a non issue, plus if you can get employee discount, and all the rebates, Durango is way better value that Commander
