You might want to get them transfered to DVD. I finally bought a Sony DVD recorder to do mine and noticed anything beyond 10 years old is getting bad, I have some from 90-91 and the quality is vey poor, I'm glad i didn't wait much longer...Just FYI.

Way ahead of you...
I bought a Sony VHS to DVD recorder last year and have been re-recording all of our precious home videos.
I was shocked to see some of the degradation that has happened to a few of them, just by the passage of time. A real shame.

I was up at Best Buy a couple weeks ago and while browsing computer programs seen the VHS to DVD program.  It was in a little box like a program CD with some audio/video cables.  It was like less than $100.

I realize it's hard to give an answer w/o seeing it but is that all that's needed?  Have a link for what you guys' are using?

We have a bunch of stuff that needs to be converted.  I think a majority of it's on 8mm.  Would I have to transfer the 8mm to VHS first?

My dad seemed to be ahead of most.  He purchased his first VHS video camera in 1983.  I believe the camera was around $2500.00 back then.  I am so glad he did that.  I have thousands and thousands of hours of video that I transferred over to DVD.  The VHS from the early 80's were getting ready to turn into dust.  I did mine on the computer as I installed intro's, made cases and added a menu to each disc.  They turned out very good.

I just plugged my 8mm video camera into my DVD recorder, played the tape and recorded directly from it.

hey 472, I bought one of those player/recorders too and found it difficult to use (well loosing the instructions didn't help) lots of set-up and programming...I never did get a chance to make a recording it was that time-consuming.
I read some reviews and selected the sony VRD-MC5. I'm not a sales man for Sony but it works as advertised, drop in DVD and format, press play on 8mm and record on DVD recorder...simple and I've burned about 25 DVDs with only one "coster"...and that was my fault

May I ask what that little contraption cost?

Thanks.

EDIT:  I researched a little and found it for $149.  Does that sound about right?

I bought a little box also with the patch cables that connect to the VCR or camcorder...found it on ebay for less than $20...came with box, cables, instructions, & DVD program for computer...

It seems like it'd be a one time gig.  After transferring everything over to DVD there wouldn't be much use for it, it seems.  I don't think people record with the 8 mm anymore?

Probably not...but my camcorder still uses the mini-vhs tapes....so I can still transfer anything I tape over to digital on my computer and then put it on a DVD....

Actually, I made a mistake....the one I won off ebay did not work with my Vista based computer.,...so I went to Wal-Mart and found the VHS-DVD program for less than $30 and that one works great...has editing software along with the option to put it into almost any video format there is.
