I made a long trip back home with my wife and kids.
We got to see Mom, Grampa, relatives, etc.

They had the 4th stuff a week early there.
We went to a nearby small town (Readsboro, VT) where they had a little fair.
We missed the parade in the morning and fireworks that night.  (plus the actual 4th was going to be the next weekend where we live)

I am struck at how similar everything is to when I was a kid.
Newer vets from a war that is going on and on,
older vets from previous,
crazy, current gas/oil prices, etc.
muscle cars fading away due to big brother,
A brand new president that is very different,
etc.
2009 seems a lot like 1977 if you ask me.
Or, maybe it would be more accurate to say,
there was a period when I was a kid, basically 4 to 10 years old,
that has the same "feel" as 2004 to 2010.

Only instead of being a kid in the parent's muscle cars and seeing the VFW guys-
I am a parent with muscle cars driving around the kids and could be in the VFW.

I remember going there as a little kid, in the Daytona!
And even is a world full of bad ass muscle cars left and right, the Daytona stood out and got lots of attention.

It used to be a bigger thing everyone from all around went to.  It was very small.  they stopped doing it for ages and are trying to get back to it.
Up where I am from, many of the small towns of the past are even smaller now it seems like.
I guess so many move away when they grow up, older people move because of the winters, more people work farther away, etc.

We were back home for the real 4th and went to a parade, had a cook out, went to a little local celebration at the park, and did some fireworks.
