The air cleaner which was on the 318 (pictured right) will not clear the carb linkage, so my other two choices are the air cleaner that was orignaly on the 318 (pictured left) and an air cleaner i just bought which is the same width as the larger 318 air cleaner, but 2/3 as thick. Will the shortness of it effect performance or will its width make it a better choice than the narrow one on the left?

run the bigger one pictured on the right of the photo - go to AutoZone or somewhere and find their iniversal air cleaner spacer kits - should have like 3 plastic rings - use the on that;s like 1/2" tall....    Thats what I did on my 360

The spacer worked great! :2thumbs:

But do I need the air cleaner gasket now that I have a spacer between the air cleaner and the carb?

I would say the criticle gasket is the one below the spacer. The carburator will get hot and the gasket will keep the plastic from melting/warping. You could run a small bead of silicone between the top of the spacer and aircleaner base...but definately a gasket on the carb inlet side.  :yesnod:
