So basically, I'll be showing my Duster this summer and I'd like to show the engine compartment. The car is blue currentley but the engine compartment is the original gold. Should I paint it black or leave it gold? I know Chevy engine bays are black but I think it would look better with the blue than the gold. It will just be temporary until I get the $ to paint the whole car one colour (Maroon red). What should I do?

duh? paint it blue.

I never actually thought of that!!!! :slap: My grandpa found a very near match to my paint in spray paint form. Damn Brian, thanks!!!

That's my :shortbus: moment for the day

Oh, a question. Would normal spray paint work or should I get some kind of heat resistant stuff?

Chrysler painted the whole car with the same paint and it holds up great - except on 440 A-Bodies.

the key here is.....Prep! . If you prep it REALLY well , even the spray bomb stuff your talking about will hold up for quite a while.

I would at least skuff the whole thing with like a scotch brite pad or something like that. " No Sandy, No Sticky"

Yes definatly Scuff the crap out of it!!!

1. Clean it off really well

2. sand or grind any rust areas off.

3. feather those area with sand paper.

4. sand it all as good as you can, with around 320 followed up with 400 or 500.

5. scuff it with a red scotch brite pad in ever nook and cranny, followed by a grey scotch brite pad.

6. Clean again VERY thourouhly with a solvent based cleaner.

7. spray the bare metal spots with a bare metal primer, then spray bomb away!

For years following it's initial resto, the engine compartment in my '68 was done using Krylon spray bombs, in a color VERY close to PP1. That is, until I yanked the motor & re-did it years later in urethane.
The spray paint suprisingly held up really good.

I've locked voting. After Brian's obvious suggestion, I will be spraying it blue.
