Is it true that there was Only 1 factory made? And that it was lime green?

69bronzeT5

There was never a 1971 Challenger convertible made with the R/T option. Only 1970.

There were rumors around that one existed, but no proof.  There was also grumblings of a 71 Hemi Challenger Convertible someone found, but proof never developed.

As for now, still fiction.

Well my dad bought one back in 72 and it was all factory.... IT was an r/t and it WAS convertable. It was sublime green i think.

He didnt touch it much and he sold it when i was 6 for not that much.

Chances are someone put R/T stripes on it and called it one. Very little chance it was a real one but who knows. :Twocents:

I had a B5 71 Challenger convertible with a 340 in it and it too very much said RT on it and had all of the correct badges and stripe.  The person I bought it from was the original owner (well her father was really but...) and she insisted that it had always been that way.  This was way back in about 1980 and for a long time I argued that they did make 71 RT 'verts because I had one but as time has gone on I've become convinced that at some point shortly after purchase the girls dad had put the RT stuff on the car.
Does your dad have anything around that still has the VIN on it?  Personally I'm thinking his car was like mine, just one that someone cloned into an RT looong before we started calling them clones.

TheAutoArchaeologist

Must have been added, there wasn't even an option to have a 71 R/T Vert.  Unlike 72 440-6 cars, where they were available for a very limited time to order, the 71 R/T Verts weren't even able for order in any form, special request or anything.

Largest engine you could get in a 71 Challenger Vert was the 383.

There is no way he had an R/T Vert, probably just put R/T stuff on there.

Even today, dealerships do all kinds of stuff to cars in order to sell them.

captnsim

Yup...Dealer optioned I bet. Guy comes in wants a R/T...No problem we'll fix you right up. Not as common now as it was back then. Course I'd like to see a dealer install AC in a new car as a Dealer installed option like in the day...  :shruggy:

It in fact was a factory car.

It was special ordered.

i have pics but my dad took the camera to north dakota.

But here is a pic of it when i was 6.

69bronzeT5

From what I understand (going by '70 R/Ts), they were only available with the 383, 440, 440-6 or 426. Do you know the vin number from the car? There's a lot of loose ends here.

I think so yes.

69bronzeT5

If it was a special ordered 1 of 1 car...and I assume your dad knew that...then why does it look like a base '71 with a 340 put in? There are basically no signs of a R/T besides the side scoops.

Yeah, hate to break it to ya bud, but that is definitely not an R/T car.
The smallest engine available in a Challenger R/T was a 383.

You still have pictures of the car on your camera from when you were 6?  Wow, that's...not likely.

Like 472 r/t SE said they will do anything to sell them.

No i have pics on a memory card and my parents took the connector because my sister had a baby on saturday.

And i figured out that it did not come with that hood. IT came with a factory r/t hood my dad said.  :shruggy:

I think triplegreen has a 71 challenger convertible that he put a hemi in last year,  can't remember for sure, but it might be purple

What's the VIN #.....probably JH27......It would have the be JS27 to be an R/T convert.

Ghoste

What color was the grille?  (it's hard to tell in that pic)
I still say it was a regular Challenger.  If it was a factory 340 car then it would have come with the twin scooped hood so if it did indeed have it at one time that still would not be evidence of it being an RT.
Why was the hood yanked off btw?

My dad got into a fight with someone and he told them he would knock his fancy blower off with a bat, and what do you know, he followed him without knowing and took what we think a tire iron to his hood.

TheAutoArchaeologist

You could get a 340 R/T in 71, in the non-convertible.

It has the wrong grille (I can see argent on my large monitor), gas cap, hood, Sublime green was not available in 71, Sassy Grass Green was (http://www.mymopar.com/paintcodes.htm).

It could have a 340 in the convertible, but from the factory it wasn't a R/T.

There is nothing wrong with a 71 R/T Clone, my 71 has non-R/T stuff on it currently.

Girls dig the Sublime 71's....
