One of the most popular GL toys looked more like a mish-mash of a 1969, a 3rd-gen, and maybe a Challenger.

I'm not sure what the story is.

It looks like maybe they started by modeling a 1971-72 Charger, and then hastily changed the most obvious errors to make it more like a '69.  (Imagine the quarter-windows and the front end in '71-72 shapes, and you've got a pretty consistent year there.)  But the overall proportions of the car still looked more Challenger-ish.  And so do the quarter windows on the final result.

I've got some interior pieces out of one that somebody did.  Flag on the interior quarter pieces below the big back window.  That had to be a good idea that looked different in the light of sobriety.  That car got squashed a couple decades ago and I only got some leftover pieces.

1st gens are already different enough, we don't need to get all redneck to stand out from the rest of the crowd. (not to say it hasn't happened)

True enough.  The only nice looking orange one I've ever seen is Larry Doerr's high wing car.  That doesn't mean there can't be others.  It's not really a body style that does well by the high impact colors.  Having said that, my kid brother just painted one of his '66s the new sublime color and it looks very nice.
