Installing lug centric wheels

Anyone have any tips on how to get these stupid wheels on the car quicker than 1/2 hour per rim? The lugs locate the wheel and the lug shank is pretty close in OD to the ID of wheel lug hole. Without the hub holding the wheel in position to start the lug nuts, it is a real chore to get the lugs started.

I made a set of 11/16" threaded tapered sleeves on my lathe but I have seen them for sale somewhere.

You have to ether have the car jacked up just high enough or put something under the wheel so it's supported, like 2X4's and plywood so it's shimmed to the right height or it's a pain. I went through this with an old set of slots I had!  :eek2:

Back N Black

I usually jack the car couple inches from the floor, then sit on the floor with the wheel between my legs and use you legs/knees to maneuver the wheel.

Ghoste

Maybe a dumb suggestion, but I also always try to keep one stud at the very top of its circle of rotation so that I don't have to rotate the tire looking for it after I get it to the correct height.  Set a bolthole at dead top and then hopefully rotating the tire will be minimized.

Plumcrazy

I hate those things, you couldn't give me a set of those.  :flame:

Those look great! Could you provide dimensions so I can make a pair for myself, unless you have a spare pair you would be willing to sell.

OD is 11/16" (like the lug nuts) for a half-inch or so and then tapers down to the 1/2" hex; the inside is threaded 1/2"-20. I made two with RH threads and two with LH threads but some only need the RH threads.

Again, I have seen these for sale commercially somewhere but Google isn't finding them for me.

Think that's fun? Try putting those *#%$@ lug bolts on a #@^%$ VW sometime.

You ain't had fun 'til you pull the rear wheels off my '50 Olds, the PO installed Summers Bros axles with 11/16" studs. I have to drop the rear end almost completely out of the car to get the wheels off.
