I'm working on my '71 newport with a 383. the pos side of the coil jumps from o to 6 to 16 volts. when i get the car to run and drive the ignition surges. when its not under load it revs like a banshee. i installed a mopar performance electronic conversion before i discovered the voltage problem, thinking it was the points. my question is whats up with the sporadic voltage? is there a solution other than running a key on hot wire from the fuse box to the coil? thanks in advance, Dave. :punkrocka:

The ballast resistor knocks down the +12v to the coil + to about +6v or thereabouts.     If the coil gets used at +12v all the time it'll burn up.

:iagree: Experienced a very similar thing. Replaced the ballast resistor and all was better.
Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.

Which is also why the low resistance ballast and the blue regulator from MP are bad ideas for the street.
