Just installed timing chain cover and oil pan, and it hit me that I think there should have been a oil splash shield that goes on the crank and helps keep oil from getting out of the oil seal on the timing chain cover.   OR was this just on some HP engines ??
Also, I have this nagging feeling of putting on a primered splash shield that keeps oil on the crank and rods.  Is that paint going to come off and clog up my oil pick-up tube ???  What do you guys think ???
I hate to think about pulling it all off again, and buying 2 new gaskets.  :scratchchin:

i believe the part is called a Windage Tray. I cant be of must more help! sorry, dont know anything about the bottom end other then to not touch it unless you know what your doing!

I dont think you accully NEED it, i think it just helps your oil pump my making your crank not splash as much.

Mods mind stepping in and education us?

The slinger ring came in all BB and RB motors. I know of people that have forgotten it and run the motor without problems, but,,,, it can go the other way too.. Some oil will always make it to the seal. It has to or the seal would be eaten quickly. I think it's job is two fold and really more to direct oil to the chain and gear. I would no doubt use it.

Again, I have to vote for removing the paint/primer from the scraper/windage tray. Some builders use a special paint in the valley to help speed the return of oil to the pan. That's the only paint I ever want to see inside a motor. That stuff is nearly indestructible. I believe it's intended use is for electric motor windings.

Sorry buddy. I would open it back up. Actually you can probably get away with reusing the same pan and scraper/windage tray gaskets unless they are cork and glued on... I use a very thin wipe of grease when I install pan gaskets. That allows the gasket to seat well and move a bit while installing the pan. I have found that going on dry will sometimes split the gasket a little causing an early leak.

slinger ring ? :shruggy:

It is a stamped piece of steel that fits onto the crankshaft after the timing chain crank gear and before the timing chain cover. It directs oil away from the crank seal and toward the timing chain at the lower gear.

Thanks for the input.   I went ahead and pulled it back off and took the paint off the windage tray.  I found a oil slinger on one of my old 440's laying around, and put it my my 383.  I can rest comfortably know. Thanks.
