This is the top plate that has the wood grain decal adhered to it on 69 70.  The studs broke off the back and there in so so shape is anyone repoping these for a 4 spd or auto console cars. I was going to have a metal shop make them out of steel same gauge.

if your talking about the flat piece of aluminum that the woodgrain is glued to that is attached to the chrome plate itself then yes, over at www.66-67charger.com is a guy named Doug that goes by IndyDoc has just started making them

my understanding is that the some 2nd gens had the ribs in the chrome top plate and those with the woodgrain decal had the same piece of aluminum tha 1st gens have (1st gens is brushed, 2nd gens would be plain ) sitting on top of the ribbed piece and that is what the decal is glued to, sorry if thats not the case

I had heard that too but it is not the case. The ribbed ones are ribbed and the woodgrain ones are flat.

wouldn't the 1st gen still work to just put the decal on or do you think the brushed effect would show through the decal??

I need the top aluminum plate that bolts to the other plate. I have mine but it needs repair. I rather a steel one this way I can have the threaded studs welded to the plate instead of the aluminum one which is a little weaker, the steel will hold better.

The original woodgrain trim plates used on '69-70 consoles were not decals, they were some sort of lithograph that almost seems to be etched into the metal.  It is hard to describe, and impossible to repair.  If you don't have or can't find mint used parts, the only choice a guy has is to put the vinyl decal over whatever plate you have.

Incidentally, if you have a really nice original woodgrain trim plate still installed on a console piece somewhere, DO NOT attempt to pry the little retaining clips off the backside.  The aluminum plate itself is extremely susceptible to damage, and merely prying around on the clips will cause a very visible pucker to form on the topside of the trimplate.  I know this firsthand   :slap:  The only way I know to safely remove the retaining clips from the stud is by using a Dremel and a small cutting wheel.

Using sheetmetal/steel would result in a more durable plate than aluminum, for sure.

I'm having a custom made set produced from a friend who's a metal fabricator. Hes going to make it out of Steel, instead of aluminum this was the studs adhere better for mounting so they don't snap off. I'm going to have a few sets made for my self & some friends. I'll post a picture when there done. Also the original what ever it was has to be replaced by a decal now.
