Retro fitting an A/C system

Thoughts on the available A/C systems I have only found two the Magazine did a story on one sounds all good with classic auto Air.Then saw a kit from laysons restorations.

You guys have any preference or expeirience with either.Got to get it out to australia so need a complete kit.

The CAA kit is for cars that do NOT already have a/c. If your car is an a/c car the CAA kit requires modification. I'm not sure there is much else available?

Are you wanting to put AC in a NON AC car?  Or just rebuild the AC system thats in it?

They make universal kits that you can adapt to fit your car.

Classic Auto Air is a local company to me and I have seen more than a few of there systems in use.. I even went for a ride in an oldie with their system on a very hot evening. It looked and worked great..

Also, try Beauchillion, (SPELL CHECK), for a pretty nice A/C pump bracket to kind of hide the pump... It requires the use of an electric fuel pump though...  I like it due to having to LOOK for the A/C pump, not just having an albatross under your hood...

The car is factory air.I see ACC also reco the original plenum but would need a core to do it which isn't rely viable from australia depending on price.

Well here's the latest.

Factory Non A/C "B" body kit is 1300 for every thing required except the controls which have to be swapped from A/C {in my case} to non A/c and that's 100 dollars.

The plenum can be restored but it is 475 + 250 for a new heater which is good but in my case the I need a 70 core to give them or I have to buy one off them for 500.Next is the rotory compressor upgrade which is another 500 1725 + a couple of hoses at 50 each so 1825 US dollars.Nice time for the Aussie dollar to hit a record low.lol

that's why I am removing the complete A/C set up from my A/C Charger. It'll look much 'cleaner' without all those big stuff like hoses, pump, rad, etc

Bouchellin*  has a set up for the pump down in the space where the stock fuel pump goes. I plan on a system like that when I do mine. I agree. I don't like looking at anything under the hood but MOTOR... This system requires an electric fuel pump as there is no room for both...

Someday I will redo the AC in both cars.  My 71 has factory AC but something is wrong with the blower switch.  My 68 has the factory AC too but I removed the compressor when it seized up in like 1978! and have been running the most foolish huge single belt system that you have ever seen.  Luckily, I saved all the parts.  Thinking some day I might put the huge Chryco compressor back on (a rebuilt one), rehose and have air again.  But that would mean also replacing the now-bypassed leaky heater core, and on and on.

Heck, got to put brakes on it first!

I put CAA in my car when i had it and it worked just fine.  Make sure to ask for longer duct hoses though under the dash.  The ones they sent are cut to the EXACT dimension that you need.  I had to stretch them out the best i could to get them to stay on the vents.  They include little screws to hold them on the vents once hooked up, but it would have been nice to have a little extra length for routing.*

Thanks you guys are kicker.Nice to have a bit of help with these decisions.I've only had my car since october last year.Never thought I'd be able to own an original R/T after selling an aussie R/T.

Norwaycharger took a complete heater/AC system out of a small modern car. He was very happy with it. Efficiant and quiet, and MUCH smaller and lighter! :2thumbs:
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

I've heard good things about CAA, not so good about Vintage Air. That's why I went with CAA for my car. It was originally a non-A/C car.
